"We're so lucky you can open portals wherever we are Elise!" Theo, a blond boy panted. The girl, Elise, grinned and Maddie swore her eyes went full black, just for a moment.
"What happened in there, with the glass bottles. And don't pretend it wasn't you. I saw it in your eyes. Why were you so shocked to see me?" Maddie began, "where are we?!" She took in her surroundings. Outside of the building was a sunny afternoon. Hotter than it was in England anyway. It looked like noon. Maddie checked the beaten clock on the wall. It was noon. But it had just been around five PM. She was sure of it. Elise turned to her, "welcome to Brooklyn Institute, long time no see, Mads."
Theo shook his head. "This is Mads, I was expecting... more?"
"She's great company, even if she's more Mundie than Shadowhunter," Elise murmured, "Dad!" She ran to a man with a trendy haircut and fashionable outfit. She gave him a big hug. Her dad didn't hug back.
"Elise, Theo, you both know not to go out on your own, that being said," he gave a wild cat-like grin, "I'm very impressed! Just look at all that-" he let go of Elise and made a fancy hand gesture, "raw power." Another man came into the room, with the same leather outfits as Elise and Theo, with more tattoos. "Magnus, now that you've praised them we can't tell them off - wait - is that? Tell me you didn't Elise." The man directed the first part to the first man, and so Maddie decided he must have been Magnus. It was a fancy name for a fancy person. But why did everyone know her? Where was she? What was going on? Magnus' eyes widened. "Ah, Maddie. Well I guess while I go help Jace get back into Brooklyn from that town you were in, you will have to find Clarissa, Alec."
Now that Maddie knew everybody in the room she felt more confident. "Who's Clarissa?" She asked.
"Clary? Oh! She's your mum!" Elise giggled.
Maddie stood there open mouthed. "Okay I'm dreaming... I don't have a Mum! I don't know any of you! What's going on?" She said as she moved towards Elise. She was intrigued by the girl. She'd never known anyone her age to have tattoos or be quite so confident. Suddenly something sprung to her mind. "Wait? Did someone just say Brooklyn? As in... In America, near New York... Brooklyn?"
Elise grinned. "Duh!" She said and Alec gave her a small glare. Maddie' eyes widened. "Oh... Wow! I've never been abroad before! Wait... How did we get here? We were... Then we... England... and America..." She looked confused. Her eyebrows were furrowed like she was trying to work something out in her head and her hands were moving like she was counting to herself.
Alec sighed. "Just wait for Clary to get here and she'll explain." Maddie wasn't really listening but Magnus nodded and he left the room. He usually would have used a portal but he didn't want to confuse Maddie even more. Alec sighed. "Theo you're in charge." He mumbled, Theo nodded and grinned. Alec left and Theo chuckled.
"Hear that Elise? I'm in charge!" He taunted her. She rolled her eyes.
"Yeah but only because you suck up to them!" She folded her arms. Theo smiled.
"So as I'm in charge. What do we do with Maddie? I mean... I expected her to be a bit more..." He struggled for a word. "Well she's a bit more mundane than I imagined. Oh and is that a school uniform! That's so..." He smiled. He was expecting loads from her from the stories of her parents but she was actually just a little mundane.
Elise smiled. "Yeah but that's perfect! We can make her one of us. And it's not her fault she's mundane, she was put into that life."
Maddie frowned. "What are you guys talking about?"
"You don't need to worry about that..." Elise said said quickly before her and Theo started to get into an argument about who would take the most blame for leaving Jace and finding Maddie. They seemed to argue often but it was mainly friendly. They heard voices coming down the corridor, they could all faintly hear the conversation so they shut up, to eavesdrop.
"What do you mean they just brought her? It's definitely her?" Maddie listened carefully to this voice, it sounded strangely familiar but she couldn't think who it was. Then she heard Alec.
"Definitely. And she's seriously confused. But don't blame Elise and Theo, they didn't mean any harm."
The door opened with a creak and it revealed Alec and a woman with the same tattoos and leather but with red, waist-long, wavy hair which was very similar to Maddie's own. Elise and Theo looked nervous. Alec took them out of the room quietly. It felt like forever before the women finally spoke. "Hello, Maddie."
Maddie gulped. She'd never tried to find her parents unlike the other kids in the home. She figured, why should she care when they couldn't care enough to keep her? She looked up at the women. "Hi. What the hell is going on? I assume your Clary? The tattooed man said you'd explain." she rushed. She was nervous and panicky.
Clary took a deep breath. "Maddie. I know this is confusing but I need you to be calm and I need you to try and trust me..."
Maddie nodded. She didn't want to listen to the woman but she knew she wouldn't get any answers if she didn't calm down.
Clary sighed. "Now... This is very hard to tell you... Everyone is right. I am your mother and all this magic and tattoos and new stuff is real. I know it's hard to believe..." Tears started forming in Maddie's eyes, she was scared and confused. Clary sighed. She bent down to Maddie's height. She gave her a small hug, "I'm so sorry... We had to give you up... Send you away from all of this... You see me and your dad, Jace, we thought we were siblings... and we thought... I grew up as a mundane as well so I understand how you're feeling. I wanted you to understand that life..."
Maddie struggled to come to terms with everything she'd just been told. She leant into Clary's arms because she felt so tired and confused. They heard large thuds, like angry footsteps pounding down the corridor. Maddie jumped slightly as the door flew open. Magnus was chasing a tall, tattooed blonde man who Maddie guessed was Jace, her dad. Magnus sighed. "Jace! I know I'm not the world's most responsible dad but I'm pretty sure running in there and screaming isn't going to go to make the best first impression!" He sighed when he realised Jace had already burst in. He was shouting, he ran to Clary and pulled her away from Maddie. He calmed down and caught his breath staring at her.
"Maddie?" She took an alarmed step back in fear. Jace sighed and touched her hair. "She's just like you Clary." He smiled slightly.
Clary sighed. "Yeah and now she's terrified!" Magnus took a step back. "If you want I'll go and tell Elise and Theo off whilst you guys have a family chat." He said as an excuse for him to leave the room.
Jace huffed. "Yes! Please! And tell them I'm going to come and tell them off properly when you fail to!" He shouted as Magnus left the room.
Maddie was shaking and looked terrified. "S-So you guys are my parents?"
"Yeah, we are. Welcome home."
