My name is Madison Lewis, and today i'm going to the animal shelter.
I'm going to the animal shelter because my mother finally let me get a puppy. I've been asking for months and months, and now that dad's gone, his allergy is out of the way.
Ah, my father. My father promised lots of things and never broke the things he promised. He promised things to me like candy, that new barbie doll, a new bike. He sometimes promised to take me out to eat at my favorite restaurant, and to let me and my little brother, Jacob, wash his car in the summertime.
But the one promise that he broke was the most important one out of all the other promises made.
My dad promised to stay with me, forever and ever, when I was 6 years old. Now, i'm 13, and he broke the promise that meant more to me than any of the barbies or lunch dates he promised me. If I could take back all the other promises I made him make, maybe there would have been room for this last one.
But obviously now I know that a promise can't control the fact that he didn't love my mom anymore.
It couldn't control the fact that he ignored her for 3 straight weeks before filing a divorce.
It really can't do anything for the fact that he just packed up his things and left, while Jacob and I were at school, and didn't say goodbye.
Or that Jacob and I had to stay at our grandparents for a week while my mother pulled herself together and became a strong woman again.
So I don't let myself make people make promises anymore. I just go with what life gives me and I go along with my mountain of life. My mountain takes me wherever it sets it's sights on, and I go with it, sitting at the very peak with a telescope at hand, wondering with curiosity where I am going next.
So, now my life mountain is taking me and my mother to the animal shelter, to buy my puppy.
"Hi Madison!" The owner's daughter bounded up to me to give me a hug. Ah, Mia. She's the sweetest person in existence, and the only person who didn't think I was weird for not having a dad.
"Hey, Mia! I haven't seen you in so long!" I said, smiling at her.
Mia has been my one friend, or even my best friend, for as long as I can remember. I met her first when I came here to get a goldfish and while our parents talked, we played barbies in the back room. Our friendship has grown ever since.
"Are you finally coming to get a puppy?!" She exclaimed. I grinned at her, not able to contain my excitement. "Yes! I'm so excited, i've only been asking for one for a year!"
She grabbed my hand and led me past the area with all the dogs and into a small corner not visible from the front of the shelter. There sat 2 roomy cages with around 6 puppies of two different breeds in each. I gasped as I reached down to pat a curious one on the head.
"These are adorable! How old are they?" I whispered. "6 weeks," Mia said, beaming down at them. "We're keeping them back here until they're 8 weeks, so that then they're just old enough to be put out towards the front of the shelter. I think one of these cuties would be perfect for you guys."
I smiled softly as I leaned down for the curious pup to sniff my fingers. I could guess that the puppy was a golden retriever from the fur color, but I asked to be sure. "Hey, Mia, what breed is this little one?"
"That's a golden retriever." She said, lifting the dog out of the cage and bent her head to look underneath it. She popped her head back out."He's also a boy." She gently put him into my outstretched arms, stepping back so I had room.
The puppy's eyes blinked up at me, a soft grey-blue color that I loved. Actually, the minute I had my arms around him, I loved him. This, one I knew was mine. I stood up gently so the puppy wasn't uncomfortable, and walked back out towards my mom and Jerry, the owner.
"Hey, mom?" She turned around and her eyes softened at the sight of the adorable pup. "I think I found the one I want." She walked over to me, reaching her hand out for him to sniff. "He really is a cutie." She admitted. I grinned at her. "So, can we get him?"
She continued petting him for a few seconds before smiling at me, then turned to Jerry. "We'll take him, and some food bags, a water and food dish, and a leash and collar."
•••••••
"So what are you going to name him?" I looked down at the now sleeping puppy in my arms. He was unconsciously tucking his head down and snuggling into the crook of him arm."I think the perfect name for him is Tucker."
