We walked into another grandiose room.
The ceiling wasn't as high as the dining room, and there wasn't a magnificent chandelier as a light source. The lights were low, candles scattered around the room. The was a billiards table in the room, along with several velvety chairs. The walls were covered in bookshelves, with detailed maps and globes.
"Please, make yourselves comfortable we shall-" he was cut off by a sneeze. I looked over, and saw the Jack of Hearts, a lady in a cream dress covered in delicate floral patterns. She was wiping her red nose rather ungracefully with a similarly patterned handkerchief. Beside her, touching her shoulder in comfort, was the Jack of Diamonds, who was dressed in a deep red suit, with a bright red tie. They looked up at all the stares, and smiled slightly. The Jack of Hearts' cheeks were flushed, though with embarrassment or fever, it was not easy to say. "S-sorry, so sorry, I must have caught a- acHOO fever." She smiled weakly.
"If you are not fit to stay, then you may leave." He smiled at them.
I narrowed my eyes. That was weird. We were basically on a crime scene, and he let both of them go just like that? To be fair, both of them were very happy people. They were married, and didn't seem to have done anything to anger anyone. Despite the rules of secrecy, Jack of Hearts was very open about herself, putting her naïvety on show. Honestly, it's surprising they haven't been murdered yet. Still, it was surprising that Ace would let two suspects leave, just like that.
"10 will escort you out. I hope you get well soon."
They both smiled, and Jack of Hearts curtseyed. Then they turned and left the room, 10 leaving Ace of Spades' side and following soon after.
I took a seat next to the Queen of Hearts, my friend. She shifted uncomfortably, and I had a brief moment of panic that it was my fault until I saw her fiancé, King of Hearts, eyeing her up from across the hall. Usually, that wouldn't be acceptable, but he had a charm, a certain charisma, that meant he could get anything he wanted just by asking.
It was an arranged marriage, one which Calla certainly wasn't happy with. But she was very attractive, and he was very rich. She was doing it for her family.Well, the little that was left of it.
