Later that day, Simon sat in the diner on Turner Avenue with Harry. According to Harry it was a 'local favourite.' Simon could see why it was, it was nicely decorated and well managed, not to mention the inability to resist the smell of home cooked burgers and fresh French fries as the waiters carried them past.
The diner was half filled, maybe ten or fifteen people in it. However the diner was rather quiet, apart from the subtle rustle in the kitchen and a young kid on the other side loudly begging for the Chocolate Milkshake which Simon had caught Harry eyeing at earlier. Harry started the conversation "So how do you like private school?" Harry asked, looking up from his cup.
The blonde breathed a laugh, "I came from one, But yeah I guess it's fine." He didn't mind private schools nor public schools, he'd been to both, and never noticed that much of a difference. But this new school seemed eerie, too old too creepy. Although it was never the school that bugged him, it was the people who walked its corridors.
"It's a little old but I don't think it's too bad," Harry stated, agreeing with Simon. "How long have you've been doing art?"
The older boy shrugged not knowing how to answer, "as long as I can remember."
The early evening light glimmered through the window on both of their faces. Harry pushed his dirty blonde hair above his face. "Oh and I forgot to ask.. did you find your book?"
Simon shook his head but pulled the book out of his bag by its coarse leather-like cover and sighed, "JJ did."
"JJ?" Harry quizzed in dismay, "how did he find it?"
Staring at his cup like it was the most intriguing thing in the world he answered, "I left it at the pitch yesterday." He looked back up at Harry and handed him the book, "he's the last person I wanted to find it."
"Why?" The younger quizzed, almost on the edge of his seat.
"The last three pages I drew," He simply stated, eyes gazing towards his book.
"And I guess he saw them?" The younger asked as he flipped the book open. Harry carefully examined every page until he reached a stop.
"Is that him?"Simon nodded, "keep going."
He turned the page again and again then stopped dead in his tracks, "why is he so sad?"
The older shrugged, "that's how I drew it. He confronted me later having looked through the book." Harry gazed back in suspense. "He asked me how I knew he was sad. More like shouted it though."
Harry shook his head in disbelief, "JJ? Sad? Those two words don't go sorry."
Simon furrowed his eyebrows puzzled, "what do you know about him?" Truthfully Simon knew near to nothing about JJ.
"He moved here two years ago. In the beginning he was really defensive, always avoided conversation. He kinda relaxed a bit though later in the year. He's so upbeat and happy all the time. He's the guy you go to for laughs and jokes. He may not be the most respectful person but he tries. I can't understand why he'd be sad. I swear no ones ever seen him frown."
"Anything else?" Simon quizzed.
Harry thought for a moment then responded, "he's a bit mysterious."
"Why?"
"Well for a start I don't think anyone's ever hung out at his house, when I mention him to my parents they say 'oh that's the Olatunji boy right? The boy we've never heard of? What are his parents names?'"
"Siblings?"
"Only child." Simon furrowed his eyebrows back.
Simon asked, "why does no one know his parents?"
Harry shrugged, "dunno. I guess JJ never talks about his family. But I mean, I never really talk about my family."
"Why not?"
Harry frowned, "whenever I mention my family someone immediately brings up my sister and asks me if she's single it's really annoying."
Simon laughed cheerfully in response. The waiter came by dropping of their food and the boys dug in.
Should I put Vik in the story? I have a couple of ideas. Maybe setting him and Harry up. If you maybe wanna see someone other than Vik (preferably a Sideman) go ahead and ask.
I was just planning on making Vikk into an extremely feisty nerdy kid or something like that but I'm open for suggestions.
Sorry about the slow updates, this was supposed to be out last weekend but I didn't have time to finish writing it.
Although the chapters are short and slow I hope your enjoying this book so far.
