                                     GRAY SKIES

THE PIANO PLAYS a song of grief and sadness, soft melodies travel across the room over every curve and every wall. She watches the girl play, her sister, she looks so concentrated. Like she was born to play.

Her sister, Maria, looks up at her every few minutes and sends her soft smiles and laughs of kindness in her blue eyes.

Days like these were days when the siblings could go without arguing away about the stupid things that sisters argued about. In the basement there was nothing to argue about, or even talk about. Maria would play something and Sky would dance. It did not matter what the piano played, all Sky needed was something to get her going. She just needed to move.

When she moved it was hard for her to stop. When Sky danced it was easy to forgot all of the problems that made her apart of the world.

The piano stops suddenly though and she is surprised as she trips over her own two feet and lands on the ground. Her knees stop her from landing further, but she let's out a groan and sits on her bottom, stretching her legs out.

“What happened?” She asks, looking over at her sister. Maria stands up and pushes the piano stool underneath it. “I have to take you to school, Gray.”

Sky frowns at the nickname. Gray was for the color of the sky that Maria thought resembled her little sister. After all, her name was Sky but she was nothing like the blue sky, she was more like rain. So Maria called her sister Gray most of the time.

“Mom said I didn't have to go today.” Sky says, standing up on her feet. “So I'm not going.”

“Yeah and mom agrees with everything you say. All you have to do is give her those puppies dog eyes, it always works on her no matter who you are.” Maria says, raising an eyebrow. “You can't keep missing school, you'll never graduate.”

“I don't need school.” Sky says shaking her head, “All I wanna do is dance.”

Yes, all she wanted to do was dance. But school made her weak, she thought. It drained her and made her stress out over things so little and stupid. And she didn't like the thought of going into school everyday and not having anyone there with her. friend. Her best friend Shay moved away two years ago and through those two years Sky stopped trying to make friends and trying to talk to people because she knew they'd eventually leave.

She sat alone in every class and everyday at lunch time, skipping all of the chances she had at allowing someone new in her life. Shay was always there to guide her and its not like she was gone forever, because they still talked. But it felt like with every conversation they had, the faster everything seemed to fade and the faster their friendship ended.

Sky blames herself for not opening up, but she can't help it. She doesn't have the strength orthe confidence now.

“You know if you wanna go to that dance school of yours, you have to attend school, because you have to finish high school.” Maria mentions, smiling at her little sister knowing that she had won the argument before it even began. Because Sky nodded at that as she began running up the stairs and out of the basement. Getting into that school was everything to her and she would not stop until she got there.

                         -*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Sky slams the car door shut when she is inside of her sisters car, rubbing her hands together to try and rid the heat. It was February and everything was still cold.

One thing about Sky was that she hated the cold and even the word winter. Everything seemed dead when it was cold and she hated it. She liked the smell of flowers and feeling alive.

“Thank you Maria,” she mutters. She doesn't dare look over to her sister who has started the car and pulled out of the driveway.

Sky can already see the smug grin on her face as she bursts out with a question. “For what?”

“For caring about my future.” Sky says. She feels her sisters hand touch her thigh and whisper out “I'll always care."

They drive in silence for a little while, until Maria sees a boy up ahead on the side of the road parked in front of a house. He his leaning against the back of the car, looking down at his phone. He wore a jacket that looked oh so familiar.

Maria smirks. “Hey, Gray isn't he that boy from the diner?” She asks.

Sky's head snaps up from the concentration she had on her fingers and her eyes go wide as she looks out of the window to the boy she spent the whole night thinking about.

He looks up as the car passes him and he smiles. Both of the girls smile back and Sky blushes, sinking down into the seat.

Sky hadn't realized yesterday that he and the boy that was with him went to the same school as she did. She only remembers seeing him around maybe once in the halls that year. She didn't know what year he was in, but judging by the car he was leaning on, he was probably a senior just like herself.

She hoped she wouldn't see him in the halls for the rest of the year. Please, anything but that.

Sky,” Maria grins. “You should ask him out, you two would be cute together.” She giggles.

Sky shakes her head, “I don't even know his name." And he looks like bad news.

“I can teach you all about boys”—of course, she was an expert when it came to dating—“besides you have gotten to that age, I think its time you got a boyfriend.” She says.

“Maria I don't want nor do I need a boyfriend. I am perfectly fine right now. I just need to focus on dancing.”

“Yesterday at work all you could focus on was him. Did you even think twice about dancing?”

No. Him was all she focused on while he sat in that booth with his friend and him was all she could think about when he walked out of the door. Thoughts of him should have ended when the boy walked past her father, but him was all she thought about until her eyes forced themselves shut.

“I knew it.” Maria says, turning to her sister and then the road. “Boys aren't that bad you know.”

Sky rolls her eyes. According to the past Maria, boys were self indulgent assholes. They were pigs and I don't need boys, Gray. Fuck them.”

Soon Maria has pulled up to the school. Eastwood High School. The place where she graced the halls in her show girl uniform. A year ago she was graduating and it was now Sky's turn. Except, she graced the halls in a pair of jeans and a dreary face. No one could ever look at Maria and Sky and say they were sisters.

The campus looked empty, with only a few students doing school work on the school grounds and a few cars parked in the staffs parking lot. The gray sky added

Sky pulls out her phone to check the time.

Maria, school starts in an hour.” She deadpans, grabbing her bag and opening the passenger door.

Maria only shrugs and let's out and an oops. “I'll see you at 3, Gray! I'm taking you out tonight.”

Sky shuts the door and watches her sister drive away and then turns to face the school.

Take deep breaths, she says to herself, only four more months. Then this is over.
