Leaves were falling and laying in piles in the grass around me. I was walking back home after yet another day of school. In Minnesota, we don't have much a seasonal change we mostly have just winter and summer, not much of an in between. Having to walk to school sucked because if it was below 20 degrees you were shit out of luck. I would be driving in a year, so it won't be a problem much longer.
I walked alone which was exactly my first choice but no one bothers to acknowledge my existence around here. I would walk with my friend Jacob but his group of friends don't accept me, and I don't know why. I haven't done anything to them, I'm a naturally quiet person the only one who knows how loud i can get is my family and Jacob. As I got closer and closer to my house, I noticed a few orange and white UHaul trucks parked out front of the house across the street from mine. The last owners were foreclosed on and after five weeks the new owners have already arrived.
I watched as several men in orange and white outfits unloaded furniture off of the trucks. I was hoping to get a glimpse of the owners and to see if anyone my age would walked out from the house. With my luck I only saw a woman and her husband as they stood with boxes in their arms yelling towards the house. Soon after they screamed two other people came sprinting out of the front door. The first one was a girl about my sisters age with long brown hair and big brown eyes, right behind her was a tall, muscular boy.
From what I saw, he looked to be 17 which was only two years older than me but was still a difference. He had short brown hair with big brown eyes like his sister. His smile was perfect and so was his arms. I couldn't help but stare as he ran to who I assumed was his mother and took the boxes and ran back into the house. I was finally able to look away and walk up my front yard into my house, but still continued to wonder who he was.
Once I got inside, I threw my book bag onto the floor, kicked off my vans, and headed for the kitchen. I searched the pantry until I found some Macaroni and Cheese and began to boil the water. I always ate lunch at home because the school lunches were horrifying. Just as I poured the pasta into the boiling water I heard my front door open, Jacob. I heard a thud, assuming it was his book bag and heard him walk into the room.
"Whatcha you cooking there Violet?" Jacob asked standing behind me.
"Food, food for me to eat and not for you." I answered.
"Shut up, hey did you see the people who moved in next door to me?"
"The the family with the son and daughter? Yeah I saw them while I was walking home. Why?" I said as I drained the pot and added the cheese and mixed it up. Jacob got up and retrieved two bowls and two spoons for us. I poured half of the pot into his bowl and half into mine.
"Nothing, the son looks like a tool if you ask me, my mom went over and welcomed them and apparently the son's name is Shawn." Jacob was shoving spoonfuls of macaroni into his mouth and I couldn't help but start to laugh.
"Well, I think he seems nice I guess, do you know if he's going to be attending our school?" On the inside I was hoping Jacob would say yes.
"Yeah, my mother told Shawn's mom that I would show him around, he starts tomorrow, I look at his schedule and he has biology and lunch with us." Jacob groaned. I couldn't help but smile thinking about how I will see Shawn everyday, I don't even know the guy yet and I'm excited to see him, this may be a problem.
"Why are you smiling so much, does someone like the new neighbor already?" Jacob said with a smirk.
"No, I just think he's cute that's it I swear." I tried to keep a straight face but it didn't work. Jacob's mission is to embarrass me whenever I like a boy and I don't want to know what he has in store for tomorrow.
