CHAPTER 4
THE FACE AT THE WINDOW
Mallard Park was so called because of the Mallard Ducks which lived in the pond there. Aylesham Council had set up a Half-Pipe for the skaters and skateboarders, but they really needed a proper skatepark, as it was getting more difficult to practice due to the high numbers using it in the evenings and weekends..
Jenny and Pete were the first to arrive.Jenny climbed onto the Half-Pipe and began practising her moves, while Pete tucked into a chocolate bar, just at the edge of the pond. Next came Kris, then Malc.
"Any sign of Joey", shouted Kris to Jenny, as she balanced at the top of the Half-Pipe.
"I think this is him coming through the gates. He's going like a rocket towards us" she replied.
With that Joey came hurtling towards them, making a beeline straight for Pete. He didn't have time to get out of the way, as Joey came to an abrupt stop crashing into him, sending him stumbling to the ground with the chocolate bar flying through the air and ending up in the duck pond.
Joey staggered to his feet out of breath, trying to say something, but only spluttering noises coming from his mouth. Pete got up looking around to see where his chocolate had landed, hoping it wasn't that splash in the water he had heard.
"What's up with you Joey". exclaimed Kris "calm down and tell us slowly what's wrong?"
Joey got his breath back and began to speak properly.
"I was skating past Hammond Hall on my way here and glanced at the upstairs window . A face was staring back, it was horrible, like a monster face, never seen anything like that before."
"Joey your imagination is playing tricks on you, what exactly did this monster face look like?" demanded Jenny
"I'll draw a picture of it. Kris let me have the petition and I'll draw you the scary sight I saw on the back. Malc have you got a pencil?"
Joey began to sketch the face at the window. A face with no hair, scarred cheeks, crooked, and broken teeth, no ears.
"Earless and hairless!" , exclaimed Joey as he put the finishing touches to his sketch.
Joey wasn't exaggerating if that is what he had seen, it looked like something you would never want to pass in the street.
"If that monster answers the door, I'm not staying to say hello!!" said Malc, taking a closer look at the drawing.
"Don't worry Malc, we'll be watching out for you behind the wall", assured Kris, as he handed him the petition.
They skated out of Mallard Park in a 'V' formation with Kris at the front .It was their 'V' for Victory sign for the forth coming Aylesham In-Line Skating Championships.
