Somewhere in the cosmos there is a five planet system that orbits a yellow star. The fourth planet of Drelian was a large planet that boasted several large continental masses populated by several diverse races of sentient life. There were five main races, although some contended that there were only four. All were bipedal with two arms and a single head with ears, eyes, nose and mouth of some sort. But there were extreme differences as well. The Roki, Tav and their sub race of LuTav were feline, the Hrael and their sub race of Hrax were canine and the Urku reptilian. The Mota were the only race without non-sentient counterparts, unless you counted the all hairy primates.
The fertile continent of Mota, the second largest of all, had the most varied of environments in one landmass save for the largest. It was home to a widely varied race ranging in height from four feet to seven feet in height. They were bipedal with light body hair except on the tops of their heads. Ears, eyes noses and mouths were all similar along a spectrum of different sizes, shapes and, in the case of eyes, colors. Their hair ranged from darkest black to silver while their almost hairless skin ranged from pale, almost milky, to a color of black so dark that it was tinged with blue depending on which environment they came from, but all were Mota.
The mountains of Tav were home to a people that resembled the four footed cats. The mountains and foothills were home to the larger of the Tav—from four to five feet tall, most boasting tawny spotted or black fur, ears with rounded tips and long prehensile tails. The forests were home to the smaller sub-race called LuTav who were rarely over four feet tall. They almost universally had short stubby tails and tufted ears. Fur color ranged from spots to stripes to solid coats of various colors of brown and gray.
The jungles and savannahs of Roki were home to a larger, stronger race of cats. Some contended that all of the felinids were one race, and certainly they could interbreed freely with no discernable issues in their offspring. The Roki, however, had been separate from the Tav for as far back in Drelian history as anyone had ever gone. Those of the savanna were mostly tawny with some black and, rarely a cream color that was almost white. Adult savannah males often sported thick manes of hair on their heads. The Roki of the jungle were frequently stockier and their fur was from cream to gold to the most common dark orange with darker stripes.
While Tav and Roki resembled cats, the natives of Hraelia resembled canines. The Hrael roamed the grassy plains of their home with herds of native herbivores that their ancestors had domesticated and bred for meat. Once trade was established, their meats fed the rest of planet as well as themselves. At a height anywhere from four feet to six feet, with fur of all colors, ears from sharp and pointed to long and floppy and snouts from barely there to long and thin, they were the most diverse race. The rocky plateau in the north of Hraelia was home to the sub-race that called themselves Hrax. At an average height of five to six feet they were almost universally thin and rangy, with rough gray or black fur, pointed ears and long snouts, the Hrax rarely mated outside their group. While the Hrael were generally pleasant and easygoing unless threatened, the Hrax were prone to violence and short tempers.
The dry and mostly arid land mass called Urku was the homeland of a group that resembled reptiles. Urku range in height from five to six feet, their skin is dry, occasionally scaly and varies from smooth to bumpy. All were poikilothermic, meaning their body temperature is variable with environmental conditions. As a result they were also largely ectothermic, controlling the uptake of heat from the environment as a way to control internal body temperature. Their coloring ranged all of the spectrum with one sub-race in the northern plateau area—the Urkunu—being able to adapt their color to their environment.
All had lived for centuries segregated in their respective home areas. One could live all their lives and never see or know of the existence of another race.
All of that changed when the Mota decided to take to the open sea. For most of history there had been strife whenever the races rubbed together. The Mota were the first to establish trade with the other races by sea at first, then eventually by air. It was the diplomacy of the Mota that lead the way for all of the races developing a relatively peaceful and prosperous relationship.
Drelian is an almost universally temperate planet, all of it's major continental homelands, save Urku, blessed with decent weather—neither too hot or too cold. Only in the extreme northern (Tunnera) and southern land masses (Sunera)- which were uninhabited—did it become cold enough to snow. Early on, by the influence of the Mota, the five major racial groups had formed a sort of commonwealth to administer the cold areas as primarily recreational zones, although a few hardy inhabitants—predominantly heavy-coated Hrael and LuTav—lived there.
The cold zones and land masses inhabited by the sentient races were grouped on two thirds of the planet, and the Mota eventually struck out to explore the other third. When it was first discovered by the adventurous Mota, the largest of the continents, Simaliki, had no sentient life.
The Mota quashed the incipient squabble over the new lands by announcing that Simaliki, like the cold zones, would be held as a commonwealth. Oversight would be undertaken by all the races that wished to participate, and all races would be equally welcomed there. Several settlements were established, the first being Wellix, the main seaport and the second being Om Basset. Despite the gloomy predictions of some, the combined homeland grew and prospered as folk of all the races—even an occasional Roki—came to build a new life in the new world.
