A Confession

We sat there drinking golden fire, watching each other with smiles that felt dangerous, knowing that this night was something extraordinary. Every sip had my mouth loosening on a secret and I knew you could see it breaking free. A secret I'd been keeping since the days when our friendship had been young...had been so much less. I caught you staring at my mouth and I knew it was coming. I knew things were about to change.

"Tell me what's on your mind," you said. The darkness of the night we were hiding in made you lean in close and I nearly crumbled into you. Your hand was just a breath from mine--how often had we been this close together over those long days between then and now? The smell of you surrounded me.

It only took one look into those familiar blue eyes to feel it rushing to the surface. One look at you had me prepared to risk three years of the closest friendship I'd ever known. I took another sip of that fire, thinking Let it give me courage and I let loose those words that had been cooped inside my heart. I whispered them over your lips and let them curl over the shell of your ear. Then I waited.

"I've fallen in love with you."
