"RAVEN STEELY!" I turn around when my name is called, lifting my sunglasses to see into the shade under the trees. A strand of black hair falls in my face as I turn, so I push it away as Will walks out of the tree line towards my car. "You know, Raven, sometimes I think you're hard of hearing. I was calling your name for a couple minutes now. Are you sure you're a werewolf?"

A grin slides onto his face as I roll my eyes in reply. "Yes, Will. I'm pretty damn sure," I reply, hopping off the hood of the black BMW. "Now, get your sassy ass in the car or you'll be late for school."

Will scowls at the mention of school as he throws a kick at the rubber tire. His foot bounces right off. "When you were assigned as my Protector, I was hoping you'd be cool. So far, you've lived up to my expectations, but wanting me to be at school on time?" He pauses at the passenger side door, crossing his arms. I narrow my eyes. "I think I might have to ask Alpha Jon for a new Protector."

A low growl passes through my chest as I leap over the top of the car, tackling him into the ditch beside the road. Mud and water from last night's rain splash into the air from the impact of our bodies hitting the ground. A gasp escapes Will as the air is forced from his lungs as I pin him down.

"Take that back," I murmur as he struggles beneath me. He keeps squirming, so I wrap a hand loosely around his throat. "Take it back, pup. You are incredibly lucky you have me to drive your sixteen-year-old ass around because you can't pass your damn driver's test. So, if I am going to be driving you around, you are going to get to school on time. Got it?" He doesn't answer, so I tighten my hold on his neck and put more pressure on his chest, causing him to sink farther into the mud. "I asked if you got it."

Will nods his head vigorously, causing mud to cling to his hair. "Yes, Ma'am."

"Good," I say, climbing to my feet before grabbing his hand and pulling him to his. "You need to finish high school before you are able to finish your training. Education is important."

We both stare at each other, faces blank. After a few seconds, my face splits into a grin as Will starts laughing. I must admit, that was one of the funniest things I've said in a while. Werewolves usually don't care about education at the human schools, despite that it's important for any leadership position.

"See, Raven? This is why I would never ask for a new Protector. You're just too amazing," he trails off and smirks. "For a woman." He seems proud of that unimpressive comment.

I cock an eyebrow at him as I make my way back around to the driver's side. "You say to the woman who just had you pinned and unable to move." The smile slips from his face to be replaced with a scowl as he mutters under his breath. "Your morning run is over, and school starts in twenty minutes. Get your little werewolf ass in the car and let's go, William!" With that, I climb into the driver's seat and slam the door shut, not caring that his entire back is covered in mud.

The only downfall of being a Protector is that I have to be with Will pretty much twenty-four, seven. The only times I don't are when he's sleeping, doing anything in the bathroom, or in a classroom. But I have to stand guard outside of the classroom door. So, yes. I get to suffer through four years of high school all over again. Luckily, Will is a sophomore, so only two years to go. Some packs are a little more lenient about this, but our pack takes it very seriously.

When Protectors and Charges are assigned to each other, it's usually when the Charge shifts or turns sixteen, whichever comes first. It's also when the Protector starts their training for the leadership position they were chosen for. From then on, they are partners, in a way, until the Protector becomes the leader. For me, that'd be the Beta, which I will hopefully be getting in the next six years.
