I walked out of my building the bright sun warming my skin. There were few scattered clouds in the sky and a nice breeze blowing. It was a beautiful day... and I hated every second of it. I hated it because Keyani isn't awake to enjoy it.
I slid into the front seat and held my head back. Keyani would've brought me lunch by now in one of her sexy and sophisticated outfits. Then we would sit, talk, and eat until my lunch was over. She'd beg me for five more minutes which we'd spend flirting and then making out and just when we've become completely aroused she'll get up and promise to make love to me when I get home.
I shook the memories out of my head and began driving to the hospital which was twenty minutes South. I drove through the Starbucks drive-through and bought a black coffee. I sipped it and continued on to the hospital.
When I arrived I got my visitor's pass and went up to Keyani's room. The doctor and Kamilla were there talking silently but stopped once I entered the room. They both turned and Kamilla had a sad look in her eyes.
"No, please no!" I yelled knowing what the doctor was about to say.
"I'm sorry Ethan, but she hasn't gotten any better in fact she's gotten worse. Her heart is beating slower each day and you can tell by how visibly pale she's gotten." He said.
"Please Ethan my baby is suffering, let her be free." Kamilla added.
The floor felt shaky and I dropped to my knees and a loud sob escaped my throat.
"It's only been six days! How can you all give up hope after six days! A week! I just got her back I cant let her go!" I sobbed grabbing Keyani's cold dry hand.
"Ethan my only child is on that bed suffering! She had been suffering the past month how much longer do you want my daughter to live in pain!? You said... You loved her!" Kamilla cried.
"How can you be so selfish! You bastard, let her go! Let my baby go up to heaven! To be free!" She cried. "You said you loved her!"
"I DID!" I yelled back, "I still do."
"With all due respect Mr. Micheals, this decision is really not up to you. Considering you are only the boyfriend and Ms. Reese is her mother, it's her descision." The doctor chimed in quietly, before leaving the room.
"Just... Just give me a minute-please."
I heard the door close and I waited a while before looking up. It was just Keyani and I now. My tears stained the scratchy white hospital bed sheets.
"I like to believe your hearing what's going on around you. Maybe you heard all that commotion." I laughed quietly.
"I don't want you to leave me, but they're talking about pulling the plug today. I wanted to propose to you when you woke up it was going to be a surprise, but I just ruined the surprise I'm sorry. I have the ring with me though."
I pulled the red velvet ring case out my suit pocket and opened it. Looking at the rose cut 18 carat diamond engagement ring I took it and slid it on her left ring finger.
"It's looks beautiful on you baby, you should wake up so you can look at it. Please wake up." I begged. I waited for a few moments listening to the slow beep of her heart monitor.
"I guess the doctor was right about your heart having slowed down. I don't want you to suffer anymore though baby, I am way to in love with you to put you through that. I'm gonna see you soon though baby, I promise. I love you."
I kissed her forehead and left the room, Kamilla and the doctor were standing outside waiting.
"Do what you have to do." I said before running out the hospital and starting up my car.
