Just like that, the beautiful gray ghost faded back behind the bush. Suki still stood, staring at the spot where the feline had been, almost as if she had left something behind, an eggshell. Torn and slimy but empty, so empty.
"Suki, đến đây!" Giang's gentle voice creaked like a tired rocking chair from the kitchen. Hesitantly, Suki moved her eyes away from the screen door and padded onto the tile floor of the small kitchen. Two long counters and cabinets cooked of tarnished white paint strode to the table of mismatching chairs and piles of flower pots. The stained, dirty window plastered behind the table was wide as it was tall. A variety of beaded swaths of translucent cloth draped from a curled metal rail that was supported above the window.
In the middle of it all, Giang stood, her white flecks of hair tied loosely in a kind sort of bun. She wore a colorful outfit and small red shoes. Giang laid down a beautiful china bowl for Suki and spooned glorious chunks of chicken and pork into the bowl. She drizzled a generous amount of spaghetti noodles on top of it all.
Suki ate the food politely and Giang scooped soup to her lips. After they ate, Suki curled up against Giang on the couch warmly and together they flipped through a variety of channels that didn't matter. What mattered was togetherness.
Slowly but surely day turned to night and the pair were eased into a bluish dream. Giang left the remote in her old splotched hand and the TV continued to pointlessly scan as they ran through fields of blissful green together in their dreams
...
brush, rattle, rattle
Suki awoke with a start and her ears perked up. The TV was still quietly moving its lights about the ceiling. The lights in the sky were still off. The night was still on. Giang was asleep still, her arm curled around Suki.
Rustle, rustle
Slowly and carefully Suki climbed from Giang's arm and crawled over to the screen door where the sound came from. A pair of yellow jades pierced the night. And just like that, the crystalline eyes were gone.
"Wait!" Suki bounded through the cat door, "Come back! I won't hurt you! I promise!"
The cat running away slowly smoothed to a stop. She cautiously turned and traveled towards Suki. She came so close their muzzles touched. Shyly, she jumped back.
"S-sorry..." She stuttered. Her eyes twitched across the ground.
"Wh-who are you?" Suki asked slowly.
"I-I live out there..." the cat turned and pointed her muzzle towards the woods.
"Really!? I mean... oh... okay," Suki shook her head stupid, stupid, "S-so wha-what's your name?"
"Um... I don't really know. I never did have a name... my dad calls me Sugar Maple but it annoys me. I mean I'm the one who takes care of hi- I'm sorry.... no, I don't have a name," she stumbled over the letters and enclosed the forbidden ones in a case.
"O-oh... well my name is Suki..." Suki replied.
"That's such a pretty name..." the cat responded quickly, "I-I mean... nice to meet you, Suki?"
"Hah... nice to meet you, no name,"
...
Back in Giang's arm, Suki grinned herself stupid as she fell asleep in a heart of moonlight.
