I would like to state that anything in this book that is similar to any natural disasters, religions, myths, celebrities - or just people in general, characters, television shows, et cetera is not intentionally based off of anyone or anything.

I am dead. I have to be. Why else would the black and white ground I lay upon be so cold, even though a dimly lit sun shines upon me? Wait, the ground isn't supposed to be black and white...

I sit up, breathing heavily as I am now awoken from the strange dream that keeps reoccurring. I toss my small, pale feet over my bed and check my phone, which is on the nightstand next to my bed. Three missed calls. I stare at the number that called me for a long time, confused at why a random person kept trying to get in contact with me. I tap the notification, and swipe my finger on the screen, staring at my nails which are bitten raw. I get sent to my call log, and then realize this is the same number that has called me every day since the weird dreams began a year ago. I slowly put down my phone back on the nightstand and go to the bathroom that is attached to my room. I turn on the faucet and cup my hands under the running water, splashing my face with water a few times and then turning the water back off and wiping my face with the hand towel next to the sink. "Snap out of it," I tell myself and then leave the bathroom and change into my work outfit.

Work is packed, as usual. Beth and Donna are running the cash registers with two huge lines in front of them, Stephan is frying the fries at an extremely slow rate with Calum taking notes so he'll know what to do when he starts working here, Gretchen and Fya are flirting with the customers at the drive-through, and Jane and I are flipping patties in the back. "So how have the twins been?" I ask, hoping to strike up a conversation with Jane. "They're good. John came over to see them yesterday. I'm glad they had fun with their uncle." She smiles, and her ocean-blue eyes seem to brighten. "How has everything been back at home for you?" She asks, smiling at me and showing off her gap. "It's been good," I say, and that's the end of the discussion as we continue with our work.

I got home late, seeing as I had to work an extra hour because of the unusual rush of customers that came in at 12 at night. I slip off my shoes and walk into the living room and flop onto the couch, turning on the TV to see a tan woman with short platinum blonde hair and green-yellow eyes talking about the weather and the hurricane that just recently hit Georgeville. I roll my eyes at the fake sadness in her eyes and change the channel, and now it is on a channel showing kids cartoons.  I watch as the main character - a boy with white hair and blue eyes - hides behind a wall as a group of men in black suits walks past him. He lets out a sigh, but then turns to his side to see a girl with green hair and dark brown eyes next to him. His eyes widen and she kicks him in the stomach with her black heeled boots. "I don't think this is appropriate for children..." I mumble but continue watching until I fall asleep on my couch.
