Her eyes found Castian, and she lunged.

He rolled to the side and her sword raked the mud where he'd been, splattering him with it. She laughed, advancing as Castian grabbed a fallen blade and scrambled up. She lunged at him again, knocking the sword from his hand with a blow so hard he wondered if something inside his hand had broken. Her eyes were wild.

"You should be with the others of your kind, half formed and hidden in the halls of Valhalla," she said, slashing at him. He danced back, barely keeping her sword from gutting him. She leapt at his right side, and he dodged, too late realizing his error as she twisted in her ark. She was going to kill him.

Vellis shot between them, snarling. He slammed a fist into her unhelmed face, kicking her feet from under her in a lightning move. Then there was a rain of blood, the strike that had caused it too fast for Castian to see. She fell.

Vellis spat blood out of his mouth onto the mud at his feet. Had she hit him? He turned, scrubbing blood off his mouth with the back of his hand.

"Are you alright?" Castian asked over the sound of his own heart that filled his ears.

"Fine." Vellis gagged sharply, wiping his mouth again. He gagged again, shoulders flinching. Castian moved up to his side. He didn't look hurt. Castian instinctively put his back to Vellis', stooping to grab another sword from a fallen warrior. He should have practiced better with these things. His stomach tightened.

The fighting wasn't as thick near them, but it seemed to be moving this way. Castian looked out over the heads of the pale army. A massive tree reached up and up and up into the sky in a dimly glowing column. It looked almost like fog, wavering slightly. A roar shook the earth beneath him, and the tree flickered. Something black and serpentine coiled up it. The roar sounded out again, breaking the air. Both sides of the army paused. Heads turned to look out at the tree. The lowest branch cracked, and tumbled to the ground.

The impact shook the world.

Vellis stumbled into him and went down, yelping in pain. Castian stared at the tree. It drew in his attention and wouldn't release it. Pain suddenly washed into him, making his heart leap and stutter. Cries went up from the Al'faen warriors.

The tree wavered, swaying back and forth. Then it fell, slowly at first, then faster, and fast. Castian dropped to the ground, and laying flat. The crashing impact didn't come though. He looked up. The tree was gone, just gone.

He blinked. The army was gone.

A wall of green rolled over one of the distant hills. It billowed along in an impenetrable wave. He could feel it, a raw, raging river of undiluted time. Had they somehow changed something? Was it a time slip? They weren't supposed to make those. They didn't make those.

Vellis' breathing was erratic behind him. He reached over and grabbed Castain's arm. This time he didn't try to shake him off. The wall of time closed in on them, blotting out the still eclipsed sun.

"Now!" Vellis shouted over the low rumbling that filled the air. "We have to get out of here now!"
