The hand ticked over from twenty-four hours, back to one second. Two seconds. Three. Four. Five, six, seven, eight.
Vellis choked out a sound close to a laugh. Castian glanced up. He looked like he was going to puke, he'd gone so pale.
"You okay...?"
"I don't know, I'm supposed to be dead."
Castian laughed. He glanced at the watch again. It had just starting the timer from the beginning. The smaller clock off to the side showed the local time, it was still moving too.
"Do you think... we were just off on when it will happen, or..?" Vellis' voice trickled away.
"I don't know."
Deric.
Castian sucked in a long breath at the thought. He might be alive. If they were alive, he must be. Vellis' eyes widened as he obviously came to the same conclusion.
"Do you... We have to find him. If--if, I have to find him."
Castian stood, pain shooting from his arm. "We have to get out of here first."
He reached out to try the door with his good hand.
The handle moved before he could touch it, and Castian backpedaled as it opened. The man who'd caught him grinned at Castian menacingly with his chipped teeth.
"Eager to be thrown into the sea, I see." He grabbed Castian by the dislocated arm. He couldn't stop the strangled cry as he pulled him from the room. "Tak, get the other." A man Castian hadn't seen before slipped into the room.
Vellis shot to his feet. The man reached for him, and he dodged, planting his hand against his chest hard enough that he slammed back into the door-frame. There was the sharp crack of a bone.
"Don't touch me."
Another man leapt past Castian. A coil of rope in his hand. If he just thought Vellis would let himself be tied up, he was the stupidest of the bunch.
The rope snapped out with a crack. Vellis let out a pained cry as it looped around his hand and the man drug him forward by giving the whip a sharp tug. Vellis almost fell. The first man pushed him from behind, slamming him into the side of the door-frame. He jerked one of his arms back, and pinned him on place. Vellis struggled, gasping for air.
Castian tried to pull his arm free while his captor was distracted. If he could just...
He jerked Castian's arm back. "Be still, boy."
His knees crumpled under the pain. The man didn't let go. Castian felt his arm pop as he fell, bones grating together.
