“Sage! Hurry up! You’re going to be late!” Sage’s mother called through the intercom. Slowly Sage sat up. Oh! She thought to herself. It’s the first day of school! As she got up to push the intercom button to respond to her mother, the room began to spin. Her head ached. She closed her eyes and breathed slowly. When she reopened them, the room stopped spinning. She walked across the room to the where the intercom was installed on her wall. Whew! That’s better. I can’t be sick on the first day.
“I’ll be right down, mother.” She said as she held the button.
“Good. We can’t be late, or you’ll miss the introductory speech.” Her mother sounded vexed.
“Alright…” Ugh, Sage thought sullenly as she looked around her now empty room. Her things were all packed into suitcases, probably being loaded into the car right now. It was the first day of boarding school, at a new one. It seemed that her mother shipped her to a new boarding school every year. This was an all-girls school, called Miss Kathryn’s Preparatory Academy. It was probably old fashioned and strict, she sighed. She looked at her outfit on the mannequin and sighed again. She then got dressed, brushed her teeth, did her hair and makeup, and went downstairs. She passed a maid on her way downstairs, her arms full of laundry.
“Your mother is waiting in the car, miss.” She said softly, averting her eyes.
“Okay…thanks.” I knew that I’m not supposed to talk to the maids, but since it was my last day for a while, I doubted mother would get angry.
“Hi honey,” my mother called to me from the car. When I got in the brand new black Mercedes Benz, my mother scolded me. “Be careful! I just bought it! Don’t scratch the sides!” I ignored her. She was already blowing on her newly painted nails and admiring her reflection in the mirror, and wouldn’t hear me even if I did answer.
“When does school start?” I asked her tiredly.
“9:30…Hurry up!” She snapped at the driver. He jumped and started the car.
“What time is it now?” I asked, worried I would be late.
“It’s only 8:45, we’re fine,” she said, and stared at the television screen, which was playing a chick flick that I had seen in the 6th grade. I turned around, put my headphones on, and waited for the ride to be over…
