As we drove through the gates of Miss Kathryn’s Preparatory Academy, I glanced up. Many girls were arriving, all as privileged as I was. It was a very prestigious school. We all also wore the school uniform, so we looked pretty much the same.

“Goodbye mother,” I called as I left the car. She was engrossed in the movie, and didn’t hear me.  The chauffeur would bring my luggage to my room later. As I was more privileged than some of the other girls, I would get my own room, and wouldn’t have to share with another girl. I was very relieved. Just then, a girl ran, no, rather pranced, into me.

“Hey! Watch it!” She screamed at me.

“You watch it! I wasn’t the one walking.” I sniffed.

“Who do you th- never mind, you’re not worth my time.” and with that she pranced away, with three girls behind her, all with their noses in the air, prancing just like her. This would be a very interesting school year, I thought to myself.

As I made my way to the front office to check where my room was, I saw many girls who all looked to be as rude and spoiled as the first girl seemed to be. I walked up to the woman at the desk. She told me where my room was, and a maid showed me the way to the 4th floor. When I walked into my room, I could tell that it would be my favorite part of this school. It was large, spacey, warm, and very nicely decorated. My bags were already on the floor near the bureau. The maid looked at me and grimaced. I could tell she was thinking ‘another rich spoiled brat for me to have to clean after…’

Then she said, “The assembly will be starting an hour late, some of the students are not going to be able to arrive for a while.”

“That’s fine.” I said shortly, hoping she would leave so I could unpack.

“A maid will be here to show you the way when it is time.” Then she left, and I got straight to work. There was a picture of my horse, Artemis, and I, which I put on the nightstand. Then I put all my clothes for days when we didn’t need to wear our uniforms, the extra school uniforms, and my nightclothes in the bureau and closet. I put a collage of pictures of me and past friends on my desk, and I put my computer and stationary on my desk, and began emailing all of my friends from the past schools, telling them that I was in a new boarding school, and what my first impression of the school was, ending each email with questions for them, and promises to write again soon.

Just then, I heard a knock on the door. A maid walked in, and told me that it was time to go downstairs. I pulled a brush through my hair, and got up quickly. I checked my reflection in the full-length mirror by the closet. I stared at my charcoal gray eyes, and looked at my strawberry blonde hair and noticed blonde highlights getting more noticeable. I couldn’t believe how much I had changed since last summer, when my dad had last seen me. I wondered if he would be proud of me. I blinked quickly and looked away. We walked downstairs in silence.  As we walked, two girls were also being escorted downstairs. They looked at me and whispered to each other. I noticed that one of them was very beautiful. She was thin, and her skin was tanned, with turquoise eyes and soft light brown hair with bright purple streaks. The other girl was a bit larger, more athletically built, and had short, choppy black hair and, surprisingly, violet eyes. Her skin was very pale. The pale skin made her eyes and hair seem even more exotic. They kept glancing at me. Finally, the one with turquoise eyes smiled at me. “Hi, I’m Ser. My real name is Serena, but I prefer Ser.”

“My name’s Calypso” the other girl said.

“I’m Sage.” I said, and smiled. They whispered some more, and I was getting a bit suspicious. Finally, Serena, no Ser, said,

“That’s a really pretty name!” and Calypso smiled weakly and nodded her head. Then we arrived in the meeting room. It was very large, and people were all over the room, some talking to those around them, and others looking haughtily around the room. I went to a seat at the back and sat down. To my surprise, Ser and Calypso came and sat with me, instead of going to their friends.

“Where are your guys’ friends?” I asked, confused a bit.

“Oh we don’t have any…we are just room mates, and haven’t met anyone but you.” Calypso said happily. “What about yours? Where’s your roommate?”

“Oh, I don’t have to have one, and I don’t know anybody here.” I said, inwardly happy to not have a roommate.

“Oh! That’s too bad, it means you don’t have any friends to hang out with!” Ser seemed to actually care about me. I was surprised.

“Oh, I’m fine. I don’t plan on making friends. I have changed schools every year for 7 years now, and I don’t care if I have friends.” This was only partially true, because I did care, and had a few friends, but I didn’t want to seem desperate for their attention.

“Oh! This is our first year here too!” Ser sounded relieved that she wasn’t the only new student.

“Don’t worry, Ser, I’m sure there are lots of new girls here.” Calypso said quietly, just then a woman walked up on the stage and began to speak into a microphone.

“Hello, ladies, my name is Miss Kathryn. I founded this school so that the young ladies of society would understand how they should behave in the modern society, and how important it is to keep the good morals that our ancestors before us were able to keep, even though it is many years after them and the world has changed much. We will also be learning many common subjects, and the reason that this is an all girls school is because we don’t want any distractions.” While she said this, she was glaring at a group of girls who had started giggling and whispering. The girls looked up quickly and blushed.

“Sorry, mother,” the girl in the middle, with the now seen cell phone said. Wait a minute! I knew that voice! It was the snobby girl who had run into me. She looked back at her phone and refrained from giggling. All her friends looked down and laughed. Her mother stalked over and snatched the cell phone away.

“What is so enthralling that you cannot pay attention to my speech?” she seemed angry. She looked down at the phone and turned bright red. She was so angry that she looked like she would explode. “Take the girls to their rooms.” She ordered the maids. With that she gestured to her daughter, and stalked to her office, her daughter following sullenly behind her.
