I woke up to the sound of my mom dropping a pan downstairs, the smell of eggs and pancakes wafted into my room. I picked my head up, still held down by the need to sleep. I rubbed my eyes and sat up, listening to my bed creak as I got up.
I stood up, walked over to the window and pulled the curtains open; letting the light flood into the room. I closed my eyes for a moment so I could bask in the warmth of the sun.
"Justin! Get down here, breakfast is ready!" My mother bellowed from the kitchen.
"Coming mother!" I screamed down to her. I closed the curtain and hastily got dressed. I darted out my door and ran down the steps.
My mother walked up to me with a plate of food and half sang half talked her next sentence, "Good morning! Happy first day of school!" She smiled one of her famous "Don't die" grins. I smirked as she looked at me. "You better be careful," Her face turned serious for a moment, but then resumed to it's happy state; "We don't want to switch schools again, don't we?" She said with a wink.
"Don't worry mom, I'll be fine." I smiled sweetly at her, hoping that she would just drop the subject of my last school. My last school is a sour subject for me, especially because of what happened. But let's not get in to that now, I don't want to ruin the happy mood of this morning.
I take the plate from her hands and yank out a chair from the table so I can sit down. I plonk down into the seat and begin eating while my mother sets out a pair of plates for her and John. John's my step-dad, I don't like him all that much. But, he is a good guy I guess.
When my fork clings against the now empty plate, I realize that I had already eaten all of my food. I don't usually eat that fast, I guess I just want to get the day over with. My mother snags my plate from the table and just stares at it, flipping it upsidown and sideways. "Ok, where'd you hide your food this time. I know you don't like the pancakes I make, you always say that they're too tough to chew."
"I swear I didn't hide them anywhere! I ate them, honestly!" I said, my eyes widening. My mother then stared at me like a detective trying to solve a case. I leaned back in my seat as she stared me down.
After a minute or so, she finally spoke again. "Fine, I guess you're telling the truth. But I don't trust your answer just yet." She then turned to John, " John, could you drive Justin to the bus stop?"
"Sure, I'd be happy to." He said with a smile. I groaned. I can't believe that HE has to drive me, I'm sure I could just walk. But I decide not to argue, I don't want to get in trouble on the first day of hell.
