It was getting closer to finals week of my 8th grade year. My friends all sat in their cool, steel chairs, waiting for the period to begin so that it was closer for when we'd all go home.

A bunch of my friends circled the desk where the most beautiful girl in the school, at the time, sat. Her name was Amie Novak. All of us immature boys would drool over her as she'd drag us along for the ride. The most anyone has ever gotten to her was a firm hug, but that was it. I'll admit, I was one of those fools who would follow her every move just to have a chance with her. But that was back during first semester, I knew better now.

There was an empty chair that had always remained empty the entire year, seated right next to Amy. It never really hit us on how unusual that was, since all the boys wanted to be with Amie. I didn't even realize it till high school. There had always been rumors that their was once another girl in our class who had sat there, but before the first week could come to a close, she vanished off the trace of the Earth. And since that day, no one has dared to sit in her seat because of the voices they hear when they do.

But that was just talk.

When I arrived to class, my two buddies, Jasper and Matthew were leaning over Amie's desk, gossiping about new students or old friends of their's. When Jasper saw me walk in, he called me over immediately.

"Hey Vince! Over here!"

I'd place my books down on my desk and walk over to my buddies.

"Hey Vinny." Amie'd say in such a seductive tone. Her blue eyes would lighten up and stare deep into my soul.

"Hey Amie." I'd choke out.

"What took you so long? We were afraid you weren't going to come." Amie again with her seductive tone. Her pencil would clip onto her bottom lip.

"I-I missed the bus and I had to walk to school." I'd shrug.

"Why didn't you call? My daddy and I would've been happy to give you a ride. You never know what kind of creeps might be lurking around here, you know?" Amie's eyes went into a concerned sort of stare whenever she wanted something of someone.

"You mean creeps like Matt?" Jasper would tease.

"That's not funny, Jasper!" Matthew'd yell and punch Jasper. Then he'd look back down at Amie, "I'm not a creep, Amie. You know that right?" he'd ask for reassurance.

"It was just a joke, Matt." Jasper would snort.

"Yes, I know." Amie'd reply, slightly annoyed at Matthew for speaking to her. Then she'd look back at me. "Why don't you sit next to me today, Vinny?"

"Uhm, there's no seats open back here." I'd stumble.

"Sure there is! What about there?" Jasper would point to the empty chair of the missing girl.

"Yes, why not there?" Amie'd ask.

"Uhm, I don't know." I'd grit my teeth.

"Hey, you guys know he can't sit there! That's where the dead girl sat." Matthew'd squeal.

"Don't be such a scaredy-cat!" Amie'd snap, "The girl just moved away, that's all. She's not dead, so quit being scared of ghosts, Matthew, it's not cool."

"Yeah, come on, Vin, just take a seat." With that, Jasper pushed me backwards towards the desk. His hands were placed on my shoulders with a goofy grin on his face. He was talking about how I was actually getting the opportunity of a lifetime with Amie and some crazy boy stuff like that when I felt something make contact with my backside as if I had just run into someone. I could feel my body pushing them out of the way till there was nothing left of them.

"S-sorry!" I'd blurt out.

"Sorry for what, man?" Jasper asked, as I had realized that I was now sitting in the chair that no one sat in. And around me, it was just Jasper and I with Amie and Matthew back at her desk. I was glancing around trying to find the person I had moved out of the way thanks to Jasper, but there was no one.

"I-I thought I ran into someone." I replied to Jasper.

"Nah man, it was just you and I. I had my eyes open the entire time, unlike someone I know." he teased, nudging my cheek with his elbow lightly.

"O-oh."

Jasper leaned over the desk I was seated at and talked across the space at Amie and Matthew while I was left trying to figure out if I had imagined bumping into someone or not.

What I hadn't expected was a small voice coming from the floor beside the desk I was seated at. A small, girly voice that sounded frightened but clung well to the air of the classroom:

"Can you see me?"
