Chapter 48 – Cravings
I didn’t know what to do at that moment, I had no idea how to feel. I could feel the adrenalin kicking in, making me furious, making me just want to punch something. I was so damned angry. “B-but, Joel was, he...” I stuttered, not even being able to get the words out.
“He was nothing like his brother Miranda, you need to know that. And oddly enough, I trusted him. My powers were enough to prove that. I’m sure you felt it too.” She said calmly, trying so very hard to prevent me from getting all worked up.
“B-but how could he keep this from me Nan?! This is just, it’s a freaking joke!” I shouted out, in pure denial, ready to laugh it all off. Tears began to form in my eyes, and I abruptly stood up, ready to run out of the room, ready to escape this blow, when something stopped me dead in my tracks.
“Miranda...” His voice was so meek that I had barely heard it, and my head whipped around in his direction the second that it was apparent. “Miranda...” He choked out again. I couldn’t believe this. I swallowed the lump in my throat, desperately trying to come to a solution in my mind.
I was completely torn. A part of me was so incredibly furious at Ashton for not being honest with me. I utterly trusted the guy. Yet the other side was absolutely ecstatic that he had just murmured out my name, that the slightest bit of hope had come rushing in, that he could possibly be pulling through from his death bed.
Along with the lump in my throat, I also decided to swallow my pride. Yes Joel was a psychotic stalker, obsessed over me, but his brother was nothing like him, and he’d probably avoided telling me in hope of protecting me. I rushed over to his side and grabbed onto his hand, squeezing it tight.
“Miranda...is that...y-you?” He choked out once more, his eyes still not finding the strength to open just yet. My eyes widened and I couldn’t help the smile that automatically consumed my face.
“Ash...Ash it’s me. I’m here.” I frantically replied, some kind of attempt to completely pull him out of the coma.
“Miranda, I, I love you, please don’t leave me.” He whispered, causing my heart to break.
“I’m not going anywhere, I promise.” I whispered back, squeezing even tighter onto his hand.
“Honey I’m going to go get the nurses.” Nan called out to me over her shoulder just before she rushed out through the door. Minutes later, the nurses were suddenly surrounding me, gently pulling me away from Ash, explaining that they needed to run some basic tests and that it would be easier if I waited outside the room. I reluctantly listened to them and made my way out into the hallway, clicking the door shut behind me.
The second I turned around to walk away from the door, I looked up to see Will standing there in front of me. As soon as he saw my face, pain washed over his. “Miranda, are you ok?” He frantically questioned me, pulling me into his arms. I didn’t answer straight away, but instead just let him comfort me, my face buried into his chest and his arms soothingly wrapped around me, gently stroking my back.
“I-I’m ok. He’s just woken up.” I told him as small tears decided to leak out from my eyes. I swallowed them back as best as I could, and gently pulled myself out of Will’s arms to look up at him. As soon as he saw my face, probably completely pale and smudged with black eye makeup, he grabbed onto my hand and began pulling me off towards his bedroom. Once we were in, he clicked the door shut behind him and dragged me over towards the bed, pulling me onto it with him.
