An AU where you don't dream until you meet your soulmate and after they die, you can only have nightmares. Kinda depressing. Hope you like it! Inspired by a roleplay done with nocturnal_writer . Happy early birthday!

Lena didn't expect to fall in love so young. She was only twelve, after all. She had met a girl the day before, just a year younger than her but still in her grade, with eyes that melted her insides. Her name was El, and they shared an art class. Lena spent the entire time talking to that girl, feeling a physical pull against her heart when she went off to the next class. By the time she got home, the feeling had faded and she all but forgot about it when retelling her entire first day to her parents.

But then she'd fallen asleep that night and she had dreamed of that girl, standing next to her.

It was confirmed- El was Lena's soul mate, and that was the end of that. The next morning, Lena's parents were overjoyed. They couldn't care less that it was a girl- they were both girls too. No, all they really cared about was what Lena was going to say, how would she do her hair, she wanted to make a good impression on the person she would be with for the rest of her life- the list went on and Lena didn't really listen to it. She was too nervous. Sure, El had probably dreamed of her too, and El already knew that Lena was her soul mate, but what if El didn't like her? What if El thought she was gross? What El thought she had cooties?

That day, during art class, Lena had approached the girl, feeling bashful beyond reason, and blurted out, "I'm your soul mate!" in front of the entire class. Whispers broke out almost immediately, about how El was so quiet that Lena had to be lying, that there was no way they could be soul mates so young, and a comment from some vindictive boy about how Lena wasn't even pretty.

But Lena was only watching El, who slowly started grinning. A horrible anxiety seated itself in Lena's stomach because what if El was going to start teasing her? But that didn't happen. El nodded and started giggling, saying, "I know. It's nice to see you again."

From then on, it was smooth sailing. Sure, it was awkward a bit at first. But once they figured out a rhythm, there was no stopping them as long as they were together.

Lena didn't expect to fight with her true love so young. She was only fifteen, after all. But the world was cruel, and for once in their lives, El and Lena weren't in rhythm.

It had started with something stupid. Thinking back on it, Lena couldn't even remember what had happened to cause her to lash out like she did, but now she was crying into one of El's old sweatshirts, in the back of her closet. Her closet was like a tree house, the only place she could go when she didn't want to be found. It wasn't like a regular closet- it had a dresser inside of it- but the dresser didn't reach all the way back. There was a substantial amount of room for one or two people to curl up together and remain hidden. This was the most special spot to her in the whole world, because only one other person knew about it.

El.

The thought of her brought forth a fresh wave of tears to Lena's eyes. There was anger, a little, because El had stormed out with little more than a muttered, "Fuck off," but it was mostly guilt. Lena had started it. El had simply finished it. And now... Now Lena didn't know what would happen. Could one simply stop loving their soul mate? Of course not. But the way venom in El's voice when she left made Lena think otherwise. Maybe the studies were wrong. Maybe no one really knew. Lena didn't care. She had lost the person most important to her in the world, and she really couldn't think.

A few more sobs came, then sniffling and suddenly a heart-wrenching wail from visions of their first kiss, their first date, the realization that she would never again feel the arms of another person grip her so lovingly, so reassuringly.
