"Aren't you coming in Katie Kat?" Raelyn splashed water up onto the dock as she did the backstroke away from shore.
"Naw, I'm good with this," I gestured with my book to the pool towel I was reclining on. My hand bumped the bottled of wine and I brought it to my lips for a sip.
River bobbed, treading the water with long strokes. "I'm sure Jericho wouldn't mind teaching you to swim." She said this with only a slight bitterness.
I breathed in the alcohol. Sputtering, I leveled her with the worst evil eye I could muster, which probably wasn't very terrifying. "Shut up."
"OHHHHH! She's got it bad!" Raelyn cackled, splashing water with her hand up at my face.
"What about you? All day long, it's Alexander this and Alexander that," I mocked.
River made a whipping gesture and then dove to the bottom of the lake as Raelyn threw herself at her. "I'm going to kill you!"
The sun beat down on our little piece of heaven and a light, playful breeze toyed with the ends of my hair. My friends splashed each other until they were both nearly drowned and hacking water out of their lungs.
As I lay reclining on my towel, I allowed my ears to venture out into the woods, listening to the sound of leaves rustling and the sharp cracks of animals walking through the woods. My ears picked the especially loud thunks of a heavy footed creature padding it's way towards us.
I frowned and turned towards the sound. "Guys, shhh."
We waited several charged seconds, my friends panting as they clung to the dock. River finally broke the silence. "What are we listening to?"
"I swear I thought I heard something."
Raelyn gracefully pulled herself up out of the water. "Yeah, it's called nature. It's not something we hear often on campus."
River floated out on her back, legs drifting to the surface. "Always with the sarcasm."
"Keeps things light." Raelyn flashed a charmed smile.
Suddenly a figure came charging out of the nearby woods and barreled straight towards where Raelyn stood. What sounded like the whistle of a train pierced the air and it was a moment before I realized that I was screaming. The man, who was clearly a man, tackled her into the lake, the both of them splashing. I crawled to the edge of the dock and searched the murky water.
Raelyn was the first to surface, "Lex!"
Raelyn's fiance's head broke the still foaming water and he pulled her towards him. "Just thought I'd surprise you."
She rolled her eyes but wrapped an arm around his neck, making a point of kissing him passionately. "Don't do it again. You nearly drowned me."
"I wouldn't have let you drown," he promised emphatically while dragging her towards shore on his back.
Raelyn's fiance flopped onto the dock and pulled her out of the water by both hands, swearing softly. "You okay, beautiful?"
Raelyn didn't say anything as she rolled her eyes and brushed past him.
Alexander ran a hand through his luscious blonde hair, shaking it out and sprinkling droplets onto my face. "Sorry, Kate."
River cleared her throat. "So um, Alexander, you're here."
He grinned. "I couldn't stand a minute without my future bride, and thought I'd surprise her." He pulled her in for another kiss which she resisted, pulling away from his embrace.
