Chapter 5
"I am very glad to finally meet you Scott. I have heard many things about you," squeaked a man with an expressionless face and a pale complexion.
"And you are...?" Scott asked, trying to sound bored so that he could mask his excitement.
"Oh, of course, I have forgotten my manners! I am Alan Boyne, and I am going to run you through what your mission is. Before we begin though, I must tell you that once I start you cannot back out of this mission. It is vital that this mission is kept in complete secrecy, because even a few words about it could compromise our investigation. It may become very dangerous. Are you in?" Alan had a peculiary high voice, which Scott sensed would become very annoying after hours of listening to.
"Yes, I am Mr. Boyne." Scott responded enthusiastically, and then winced at how childish he had sounded. He reminded himself that he was in a professional environment.
"Please, call me Alan. Now, that is all of the basics covered, If you are ready, I will start explaining."
Scott nodded.
"So basically, you are suspicious of a girl, Yvonne Barlow, who has been released from prison and claimed that she has changed his ways, seen the light and turned to the arts, in other words decided to make a movie. Her production studio is in the middle of the desert, and this seems highly suspicious to you. You think that she's doing something but you have no proof, and you want to send an agent in to monitor the situation. Where exactly do I come into this??" Scott queried, thorughly bored by this point, after listening to Alan's mouse--like voice for over an hour.
"Well, Scott, the thing is… recently some of our agents have been discovered to be… corrupt." Alan murmered, embarassed.
"So you are one of the most secretive agencies in the world and you are having INTERNAL AFFAIRS?" Scott laughed in disbelief.
Alan ignored this snide remark and continued on. "We also need you because an adult wouldn't fit in. We have found that Yvonne is looking for a few kids to be extras in her film, and we all think that it is the perfect opportunity to get an agent on the inside. You already have your gadgets for protection; use them wisely."
"So what exactly should am I supposed to do? What do you want from an ordinary, 13 year old boy like me? Scott questioned, confused about the loose ends that didn't match.
"We want you to get in, find some evidence, and get out. It's as simple as that. We will give you a communicator that you will be able to contact us in an emergency through, and you will have your gadgets for when you are in a fix, but, other than that you will be alone. You get it?" Alan said, his high voice getting impatient.
"Yeah… I guess I do…" Scott replied, still feeling perplexed.
"What is it now?" Alan sighed.
"Well, this doesn't seem very smart to me. Sure, this chick has been locked away in prison for years, but how do you know that she HASN'T changed? What if you are wrong? What happens then?" Scott asked, feeling that it may well be a waste of time and money. Alan seemed convinced that Yvonne was guilty of something, but Scott wasn't so sure.
"Then you get to appear in a movie and you come back here to go on your next mission, if you are up to it. If not, then I am sure that you can go back to your father, although I am aware that you have a bit of a rocky relationship with him." Alan replied bluntly.
"I can't go back to him! There must be somewhere else I could go, there has to be!" Scott exclaimed.
"How about you worry about your assignment and we will focus on the future arrangements?" Alan proposed. "Deal?"
"Deal."
