As soon as I entered, my hands started feeling sweaty and my heart beats quickened. Why had I agreed to this?
The basement was huge. It had that bit of a gloomy vibe to it because it was underground, but the way they furnished it made it a more relaxing place to be in. The bright lighting gave away all of the radiant colors. The simple beige couch had bright pillows and blankets thrown on it to give it a homey vibe. There was also a small kitchen, probably filled with junk food and snacks, but a kitchen nonetheless. However, what really made this basement special was in the far corner. The corner was packed with drums, guitars, and mics. This had to be the place where they practiced.
Shawn was leading me towards a group of people. Each one had a kind of instrument near them. There was a short girl with blonde hair holding a guitar. She looked at us and gave us a small smile. Shawn pointed at her.
"That's Sara, she is the one who plays the guitar. She looks like the sweetest girl you'll ever meet, but when you get to know her, she can be a nightmare when she is angry." He said, looking at me hoping for any kind of facial expression. When he found me having a straight face and still looking like I'd rather be in a farm milking cows, he gave up.
He then pointed towards a guy with curly hair. He was using two pens and drumming with them on a table, creating a catchy beat. "That's Ethan," Shawn implied, " He plays the drums, which is pretty obvious."
Shawn then started looking around, searching for who knows what.
" You know, Camila, I'm gonna have to leave you for a minute. I can't find Alex."
He then left me,alone, in a room full of strangers.
I struggled to speak. He just left. Like that. I saw everyone turning their heads and looking at me. My mouth went dry. Everyone was staring.
They probably thought I was a weirdo.
Why did Shawn leave me?
Did he just use "find Alex" as an excuse for leaving me?
I should've smiled, or even waved at the others. No, I couldn't do that. It was too risky. They probably would've thought I was too desperate. Now, they were all glaring at me in disgust. I was horrified.
"Hey," The blonde girl said to me, waking me up from my paranoia. "You look absolutely terrified." She laughed.
The girl gave me a sweet smile. "What's your name?"
"C-Camila." I said. Did she not know me from school? After all, I was famous for being awkward in social situations. Like right now. "You don't know me?" I asked, confused.
The girl looked perplexed, as if trying to remember something. "Not really, no. I mean, I may have seen you around school a couple of times, but that's pretty much it."
"Oh." I said, staring into space, avoiding eye contact. However, the girl didn't seem to notice. Much to my dismay, she was too busy talking.
"Well, come on! Since Shawn left you in the middle of everything, let me introduce you to the others."
I was about to use any excuse to hide from the situation like " I need to go to the bathroom." However, her beaming smile made me less anxious. We walked over to them, and the closer I got, the louder the music was.
"Everyone, this is Camila, she is auditioning." Everyone looked at me, and waved.
I didn't wave back. I had to remember to be cautious, I didn't know them. I smiled instead.
"So," Ethan said, still drumming with the pens. " What makes you think you've got enough talent to be in this band?"
"Uhmm," I said, trying to remember the words I had practiced in front of the mirror for an hour. Remember Camila, remember. Why did I always forget?
I must've looked conflicted, though, because sooner or later......
Sara said, "Its okay, Camila, its not like its a job interview or something."
I was about to form a response, until Shawn came in with another guy with red hair.
" I finally found Alex." He said, looking at Alex with disgust.
"Its not my fault, man. How was I supposed to know we were supposed to meet 3 hours ago?"
" We sent it on the group chat, each one of us told you privately, and we told you about five times yesterday."
" Well, you forgot to remind me to make an alarm."
" Why would I remind you to make an alarm, you're not nine." , Shawn said.
" I strongly disagree with that statement, Shawn." Ethan said as he suddenly popped into the conversation.
" You guys are always arguing, its boring being the only girl in this band." Sara said, her hand on her face.
"Why don't you join another girl band where they paint each others nails and braid each others hair all day?" Ethan said.
" That is absolutely sexist! That's all boys think girls do, don't they?"
As they all argued, I couldn't help but feel a bit of an outsider. Here they were, having a silly argument that they would probably hug out in the end. And here I was, standing like a frozen statue in the midst of a crowded stadium.
