The first day of our very first visit with our mom at her home in Oklahoma went off without a hitch. We knew what dad expected of us. He was very serious when he found out about how we'd destroyed the high school football field. He was at a loss of anything to say when he saw the number we'd done to it. He'd talked to the chief of police and had worked out a deal with him. We were to both clean up the four parks in town in exchange for the high school principal not pressing charges on us for the destruction we'd caused.
Dad told us, "Boys, I am telling you two right now if you pull any kind of shenanigans, illegal or not, while you're in Idabel you won't be allowed the privilege of going back to your mother's house again. You've both been in enough trouble to last even the worst type of criminal an entire lifetime. Do the two of you understand what I'm telling you?"
Trey and I looked at him while gulping down our breakfast. We told him we understood in between bites of scrambled eggs and buttered toast with strawberry jam. We knew just by the look on his face that he meant what he told us about stopping the visits with our mom.
Dad looked at us with the seriousness of the situation written on his face and said, "Trey and Grant, I don't think I need to tell you how important it is for the two you stay out of trouble while visiting your mom and step dad. I was able to keep y'all out of trouble for the most part, and out of juvenile hall for that matter, last summer. But both the sheriff and chief of police told me if the two of you pulled anything like that again, you'd both wind up in juvenile hall if I wasn't able to control you better. Grant, do you understand what I am saying?"
I nodded my head saying, "Yes, sir. I understand what you're telling us. Trey and I definitely don't want to wind up in juvenile hall. We'll both be on our best behavior. You will only get good reports from Mom when we get back from our visit over the summer. She'll tell you that we were complete angels."
Dad looked at Trey and I with a smirk on his face. It was as if he knew beyond a shadow of doubt that we'd get in some kind of trouble by the end of summer.
Dad really had no way idea how much the thought of juvenile hall scared us. We'd classmates who'd spent weeks, months and sometimes years in that place. Trey and I had made a pact to do whatever it would take to keep ourselves out of trouble. We knew it was very hard for him to believe in us. We had a lot to do to prove to Dad that we were capable of staying out of trouble.
I meant every word of what I said to him. I knew the chief of police was just itching to book us into juvenile hall. There were a few times we'd come really close to spending a few nights in juvey hall. We both knew beyond a shadow of doubt if that happened, Dad would tan our hides.
Before Mom got to Blanchard with Larson to pick us up, Dad told us what he expected us while. We knew how was serious he was. After our shenanigans last summer, we knew that he meant what he said he told us if we screwed up again in any way, he'd make sure we were stuck in summer school until we graduated.
At the beginning of last summer, the day after school let out, Trey came up with a brilliantly stupid idea to redo both of our wardrobes, without money. We were in hot water when dad found all the clothes Trey had stolen from an expensive department store. He made sure we'd never steal again, even though I wasn't the one who took the clothes. Trey was hell bent on getting me into trouble. He knew that he wouldn't be the only one to get punished by Dad if he thought I was in on whatever Trey had cooked up. The week right before the fourth of July, Trey took a few of our biggest fireworks along with some of Dad's stash of White Lightening with us on a walk. He promised we wouldn't get into any trouble. Trey stashed the fireworks in an old leather backpack that used to belong to our oldest brother, Joshua. With that, he said that we were going to hang out at the high school football field.
To say the least, we knew that we were skating on thin ice. Mom and Dad agreed if we got into any trouble at all he would come to Oklahoma, pick us up and bring us back to Blanchard with him. This was the one chance we'd been given in a while to prove we could keep ourselves out of trouble.
Once Mom and Larson made it to the house, we were told to put our stuff in the back of the truck. While we were on the road, Larson said he and Mom had planned a lot of activities to keep us boys busy while we were on our visit.
My sixteenth birthday was just a few days away. For the longest, our dad was the one who celebrated our birthdays with us. Hell, our dad was really all Trey and I knew for six years out of our lives.
We didn't really know what to expect. I was really on edge, especially with my sixteenth birthday just around the corner. I just didn't want to have a fucked up birthday. Mom had already screwed up a lot of things in our lives. What else was she bound to fuck up?That was the question that kept going through my mind. There were many things Mom had done to Trey and myself. To say that I didn't trust her was an understatement. She had not been part of our lives for so long, Trey and I didn't know how we'd ever be able to trust her again.
Larson was a different story. He had this aura around him, the type that let anyone around him know they could trust him. We had high hopes that we would, one day, be able to trust our mom as much as we already trusted him.
On the way back to Oklahoma, there was someone Larson said he wanted us to meet. For about half of the ride to Idabel, all Trey and I could is wonder who it was that Larson wanted us to meet. He was trying to make us part of the family he'd created with our mom. He was really ready introduce us to someone in his inner circle. That fact was stuck in the back of my mind all the way back to Oklahoma.
As soon as he said there was someone he wanted Trey and I to meet, my mind went into overdrive. There were all kinds of questions going through my mind. Things like: What's so special about the person, or people that Larson wants Trey and I to meet? Why is he wanting to introduce us to these people? And why is he being so secretive about it? What's with Larson? Is he just wanting us to feel like we're part of his family?
For the remainder of the ride, I settled my racing thoughts with the last thought I had go through my mind. Larson was just wanting Trey and I to feel like we were a genuine part of mom's life. Maybe, in the long run, mom will prove that she really wants to be in our lives.
I tried not to think about what Larson had said to us, although I would be lying if I were to say that it was easy. I wanted to give mom the benefit of the doubt. Maybe she really had turned over a new leaf. Only she would be able to prove me right or wrong.
I had never in my life been on such an exhausting car ride. I slept for the last hour of the trip. Trey and I were relieved to be able to get out of the truck and stretch our legs when we finally pulled into the driveway at mom's house. We had both chit chatted about the things we were looking forward to doing while we were in Idabel. We had been looking forward to spending time with Grandma and Grandpa. There was no telling how long they both had left on this earth.
When we got to Mom's house and got settled into our rooms, Larson told us that he was going to take us somewhere. We were excited but we were a little on edge. Trey had said something about visiting our grandparents as soon as we pulled into town and were settled in so he was a little upset.
Once we were settled in, Larson told mom that we were going to leave for a while but we'd be back in that we would be back in time for dinner.
With that, we went out and got in the truck. Larson looked at us and asked, "Now boys, are you ready to meet the people I was talking about on the way back from Louisiana?"
I looked at my brother with apprehension written on my face. I looked back at Larson, shrugged my shoulders and, "I guess now is as good a time as any. Let's do it!"
With a bit of a smirk, Larson started the truck and put in gear. It was not until we got to Larson's brother's house that he told us that he wanted us to meet his brother's two stepdaughters.
