"Don't leave"

"I have to"

"But why?"

"Your father and I have some problems we can't fix."

"Why can't you fix them?"

Because we can't!" She says as she shuts her suitcase full of clothes. "Now listen to me. I'll see you again. Just wait, ok?" She tells me with tears in her eyes

"Mommy where are you going?"

"Somewhere far away" she hugs me tightly then walks towards the door. "Goodbye"

She shuts the door.

That was over 30 years ago. Hi, I think you all know who I am. I'm 38 now, and this is the story of what led me to become who I am today. Don't worry. It's not a long story. Nothing in my life lasts long. But let's continue, shall we?

When I was 5, my mother left me and my father. I didn't understand it back then, but now that I look back, I remember all the fighting, all the yelling, but most importantly, the discarded bottles of alcohol. Yep. My mother was an alcoholic. And a serious one, at that. I don't remember a day where there wasn't a pile of beer bottles somewhere in the house. I guess my father got sick of it, and kicked my mother out. I don't blame him. From what I remember, she wasn't a good person. But whatever. That's not the only thing to happen to me.

My childhood was mostly normal. I got good grades, I had a couple of girlfriends, and I had some great friends. It wasn't until I was 16 did something different happen to me. My mother came back. She didn't tell me or my father. She just showed up. Keep in mind we kept 0 contact with her. And she's just waiting at house after school one day. I remember seeing her and stopping. Thinking "No" over and over again. She saw me and walked over. I'm not going to go over the details, but those first few minutes were kind of awkward. Ok, very awkward. I didn't say much. I didn't know what to say. Imagine your mother leaving you for over a decade and just suddenly deciding to come back. How would you react to that?

Oh, and don't worry, once my dad came home, it was less awkward silence and more angry yelling. Damn, I had forgotten how loud they were when they fought. Eventually, my mom convinced my dad to let her spend an afternoon with me. To show me that she's changed. Now, I'm not an idiot. I wouldn't let my guard down around her. But, there was that part of me that hoped that maybe, just maybe, she changed.

She did.

Hey guys! This is a multiple part story (still haven't decided on how many parts. 5 or less, though) I'm gonna try to do a chapter at least once a week. I'll see you all in the next chapter!
