Prologue
I looked up from my cup of coffee, still hot in my hand, and looked across the busy downtown Athens street. It was around lunch time and the line was incredibly long at the Five Guys restaurant I was looking at. I watched as the people filed in, ordered at the registers, waited a few minutes for their meal or went to get drinks until their meal number was called and then took seats in the well-heated building to escape the icy grasp winter had on the city. And it was then that I saw her...no, I saw her eyes first; those unmistakeable dark blue eyes, and then I saw the rest of her.
I was frozen in place. My heart seemed to stop beating for what felt like eternity, it just couldn't be. There she was though, in the flesh... just as gorgeous as I remembered her. How was it possible though? Jazmin had passed away more than a year ago now. Within moments she must have realized I was staring because she started gathering herself in a fury and started to head for the exit of the restaurant, as if all of a sudden she remembered a meeting of extreme importance that she was on the verge of being late for. I knew it was because I'd been staring and my heart sank, had she been in hiding all this time?
As soon as she was beginning to stand, I stood up as well and stepped out of the enclosed, outdoor seating area; not even caring that I was about to leave my fresh coffee on the table. As soon as she left Five Guys she started to walk across the intersection to the UGA campus and I knew if I didn't hurry I would lose her. The idea killed me.
"Hey, wait!" I yelled out at her, causing many of the college students miling about to give me strange looks. The woman that looked like an exact replica of my late wife looked over her shoulder once and sped up. For someone in a calf-length, furred coat and high-heeled winter boots, she was moving surprisingly fast. She was walking toward the bigger of the two fountains on North Campus and just as she was about to go around it I had to see if it was really her, "Jazmin!"
This made the woman freeze on the spot. She turned to face me, and the look of pity, of regret she had made my heart sink even lower into my stomach than it already had. What was going on here?
"I'm sorry Emeria...but I'm not Jazmin." she said slowly, in a tone that sounded as if it caused her physical pain to say the words. She had the same saultry, honey voice that I remembered though, how was it not her?
"But you're..."
"Exactly as you remember her? I know."
I had to sit on the edge of the fountain as the floor seemed to move from underneath me. What was going on? Then an even more important question came to mind, "How did you know my name?"
