CHAPTER 1:
I didn't choose to be on my own...all alone. There is no one to ever talk to. I can never interact with real people. They are like aliens to me now.
I'm Hayley. Hayley Seguin. I'm eighteen years old now. I would be in the twelfth grade...but I never went to school before. It's a long story...
Ever since I was younger, my mom used to beat me. She would hit me until I was bleeding.
My dad left my mom after I was born. My mom wasn't ready to raise a child, since she was only eighteen. She has absolutely no idea how to take care of a child. She didn't have the best job in the world- working at Burger King, but she managed to get by...kind of.
I can't describe my mother anymore. I haven't seen her in ten years. I hated her guts. She was extremely depressed, and wouldn't ever come home until early morning. She would always bring a strange guy home...a different one every night.
I also noticed when her depression got really bad, because she would take these strange pills nonstop. And she would be drunk whenever I saw her in the morning. I knew there was something wrong with the pills and whatever was in those drinks, because she would act loopy all the time. But that is where the beating came in.
One day I asked her, "Mommy, can I go to school?"
She said, "Why?"
I said, "I wanna know what it is like."
She would say, "Don't you dare tell me you want to school!! You can't go, because you're not smart enough. If you were intelligent enough, the I would let you go!"
I remember her then picking up her pills, along with her sketchy drink, and walking away. I was balling my eyes out. My own mother didn't even think I was smart!
She would never spend time with me, so I had to learn how to fend for myself at a REALLY young age. It was pretty hard to learn how to do a lot of things, but I made it through. I left home when I was eight. Now that I think about it, I should've stayed a little longer, to wait until I could find more of my mother's money. But I managed to make through it.
I was very curious when I was younger, and I had to know everything about everyone I knew -which wasn't a lot of people. I never got out, because my mom would lock me in the house all day.
One night, I stayed up until she got home...that was the night I left. It was 4 am, and I just sat on the couch, watching the clock, and the door. I heard some footsteps as two people walked inside. My mom threw down her purse at the sight of me.
She gave me the death stare. I don't know why I was so afraid of her, but I guess I thought she would eventually try to kill me.
She said, "Go to bed."
I said, "NO!"
She walked a little closer, "What did you say to me?"
"No."
"Hayley! Go to bed!!!!!!"
I shouted, "YOU'RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME!" It was the worst thing I could've said. Ever.
My mother took a drink of the strange liqor, and grabbed me by my hair. I swear she ripped some little blonde strands out of my head. She slammed me against the wall and started choking me. I got so scared. Who is this lady?
I kicked her in the stomach and ran to my room. She was lying on the floor, unconcious from that drink she had, while the sketchy man tried to revive her.
I pulled out all my clothes and stuffed them in my backpack- that I never got to use for school. I was ready to leave when I grabbed my stuffed teddy bear. I ran into my mom's room and grabbed her wallet. She had over $500 in there!!!!! I climbed out the window and ran to my treehouse. My mom would never have found me in there. Not like she even cared.
I would leave in the morning and see what happened. I didn't really know what was going to happen to me. I was only eight, but I knew I couldn't stay there any longer.
This was my new life.
