"NICO!"

I turned my head at the sound of my name, and was not surprised to see a red faced William sprinting towards me.

I cocked an eyebrow, jut my hip, and tutted as he reached me.

"Will, look at you; over exerting yourself."

He laughed at my use of his words, I heard them whenever I end up in the infirmary.

After his panting subsided, I could see pure, boyish excitement was prominent in his crystal eyes, and prompted by my questioning stare, he explained his sudden arrival.

"Chiron wants us at the Big House, I hope it's a quest, wouldn't that be fun? Questing together?"

I nodded, hoping to end his rambling before it becomes too extreme, but simultaneously found it quite charming.
Wait. Charming?! How on earth can rambling be anything but a major annoyance? But nothing about Will's unnecessary chatter seemed anything but endearing. It must be his natural positivity, maybe its rubbed off on me?

I was yanked out of my extremely important internal debate, by a warm palm on my wrist, Will had grabbed my arm and proceeded to tow me in the direction of the blue structure.
I gave in and allowed myself to be pulled along, not seeing any justification in fighting over it.

As we neared the building, I saw Chiron and Mr D on the verandah, most likely playing pinochle again. As they spotted us, Chiron smiled and waved, while Mr D audibly groaned and frowned. Typical.

When we reached their table I asked what's happening in obviously tired tones. Can't I catch a break?!

"Straight to the point, Nick."
I sighed and didn't even bother attempting to correct the deity.

Chiron looked at me with a mixture of sympathy and the same excitement Will possessed.

"You and Will have been personally chosen for a quest."

I opened my mouth and started spewing complaints.
"What!? We save the world, and not even six months later have to go on another quest? It's-"
I skimmed through my vast selection of curses, not finding any that they wouldn't find ridiculous. Being born in the 1940's, most of my profanities were jokes now.

Will saw me struggling and decided to step in. "Absolute bullshit?"
I nodded. "Yes. That."

Chiron smiled. "I understand your frustration, but this quest is different from any others you've been on. As you've probably realised, there are only two of you going, and I can almost guarantee you won't die."

I smiled drily. "Reassurance at its finest I see."

Chiron ignored my blatant sarcasm and pushed on. "Hecate has requested you by name." He emphasised the word name, making it very clear that refusal would end in vaporisation.
I rolled my eyes.
"Hecate? What in Olympus could she want?"

"Well," Chiron started, "I suppose I better start from the beginning."

One very interesting but rather long winded explanation later, I thought I had a decent understanding.

"You mean to tell me," I counted on my fingers as I spoke, "Hecate blessed a bunch of mortals with magic. They founded their own secret society. They have schools where they teach children magic. You want us to go under cover to one of said schools. And form an alliance."

Chiron nodded but I wasn't done.

"All while remaining undercover without telling a soul about our real intentions or origin."

Even Mr D winced at my blunt description of the ludicrous task, but Chiron just smiled.

He pat me on the back. "I'm glad you were listening, you leave tomorrow. Go pack, heroes."

I slowly turned and walked down the stairs, Will could be heard following me.

As I began to stroll toward my cabin, the son of the sun fell into step beside me. A short silence stretched over us before he broke it with a laugh.

"Fucking crazy huh?"
I glanced up at him and saw he was smirking slightly.

I breathed out heavily. "I guess so, I mean, it could be worse."

He cocked his head. "How so, Skelly?"

I growled at the godawful nickname before answering. "I could be sent on this quest with some knucklehead that'll make me flip my wig before we even arrive."

He snorted at my use of slang, which caused me to frown, which caused him to snort some more. He then continued snorting at his snort and before I knew it, he's out of breath and rosy cheeked because I said flip my wig.

I rolled my eyes at his immaturity, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't keep the smile of my face, nor the all-too-familiar swell from my stomach.

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed!
