“It’s Thursday!!!” Cassandra’s voice rang, oddly from Charles’s side of the walkie-talkie.

“Cassandra?! What are you doing? Over.”

“I hacked into Charles’s computer! Over.”

“It’s-It’s a walkie-talkie, Cassandra. Over.”

“Oh yeah,” Cassandra said, snickering.

“Over,” Charles whispered, reminding her.

“Oh my gosh, OVER! Okay? OVER!”

“Why is Cassandra over there? Over.”

“Cassandra doesn’t know why Joe is talking in third person. Over.”

Joe sighed, losing patience. “What are you doing at Charles’s house, Cassandra? Over.”

“We’re planning! Over.”

Without me? Joe thought. I thought I was her planning buddy.

“It turns out Cassandra can’t read maps at all. Ov—”

“I can too!” Cassandra interrupted. “Over.”

“What’s the plan?” Joe asked. “Over.”

“We’re gonna sneak out of the school group when we see a hospital. Over,” Charles said.

“How? Over.”

“Interesting question. That’s why we’re planning. SO STOP BOTHERING US. Over,” Cassandra said. She was giggling. Funny. Joe wasn’t amused.

“You’re the one talking to ME!” Joe shouted. “OVER!”

“Oh crap, I’ve hurt your feelings. You know I’m a bitch, right?” Cassandra asked.

“I’m starting to notice it more and more. Over.”

“Noticing what?” a voice said from his window.

CRAP, IT’S ALICE.

“Nothing. I’m just talking with—”

“What’s going on over there?” said a voice from the walkie-talkie. Joe was so freaked out and caught in the moment that he didn’t recognize it.

Alice shimmied her way into the room and seized the walkie-talkie.

“CASSANRA?!” she screeched into the device.

“What? No, no… It’s me, Charles,” he said, coughing from the other end. “My voice sounded a…a little weird there, huh? Over.” He finished hastily and added, “Uh, see you later, Joe. Bye, Alice. Over.”

“What are you doing talking to Cassandra? I know it was her.”

“I…. I, uh…” Words failed Joe now.

“Exchanging loving words?”

What the…? “No! No, why would I do that when I have a wonderful girlfriend like you?”

Where did that come from? That sounded GOOD. But was it true? Yeah. Of course…

“Well, you’re gonna lose one wonderful girlfriend at the rate you’re going!”

“Um, I should probably go… Over,” Charles said from the walkie-talkie.

“SHUT UP, CHARLES!” they both yelled.

“Jeez, calm down guys,” Cassandra said.

Oh, why, Cassandra. Why?

“Cassandra?” Alice asked, talking into the walkie-talkie. “What are you doing?”

“None your business—”

Then Cassandra said it.

She said it.

And all hell broke loose.

“—bitch.”

“WHAT DID YOU JUST CALL ME?!”

“Cassandra!” Charles hissed.

Joe sat on the bed and whimpered. It was going to be a long night.
