Niall's POV

Silence.

It was all around me.

Unlike during the day, at night, downtown was a ghost town. Not a single person was out and about at two in the morning, or at least from what I've seen.

Since the time I've been living here, I've slowly learned the ways of the busy, bustling, city life. I've learned where, and where not to be and when. Especially when you've got camera crews staked outside your window all night, and girls with hawk-eyes scanning the town for you. You learn pretty darn quick how to adapt.

My hood is draped over my face, so no one can see it. Even if not a single person or car is out, it's better to stay on the safe side. And it didn't matter that it was dark outside, my sunglasses perched on my nose, shading my weary blue eyes. I was so tired, but I had to make this delivery.

I took a left turn when I got to the corner, fingering the envelope corner in my pocket out of anticipation. I had done this many times before, yet every time it made my heart beat quicken, and my throat swell in my chest.

The lamppost on the corner flickered twice, and I rounded the corner after peeking. I didn't want to take a chance, not now.

My footsteps were the only things I could hear, as I quickly walked down the sidewalk towards my destination. I paused briefly, before I slowly took a left into a dark alleyway.

I stood in the dark momentarily, carefully placing one foot in front of the other. This is where they said- My thoughts stopped as a voice rang out.

"Who's where?" A figure stepped out from behind a business dumpster, taking a step closer. The sudden noise sent me jumping ten feet high.

"I-I-It's me." I stammered, stopping in my tracks. A flashlight shone in my face, causing me to squint. I couldn't see who was holding it, but I had a pretty good idea. There was a long pause, so I decided to speak. "Can I see Ty?"

The guy chuckled, "It is me, you dumb ass." He said, and his good mood quickly changed to his regular foul mood. "You got the cash?"

I nodded quickly, digging the envelope out of my pocket as I handed it to him. He opened it, and began counting the bills. "A thousand even." I said, surprisingly bold.

He froze. "I thought you said two thousand." His tone was hard, and angry.

Oh, shit. "I-I-I thought we agreed on One..."

"I said two!" I stuffed the bills in his pocket, taking a step forward. "I want my cash, boy!"

I stepped back, "I-I-I don't have any more! That was all I had! I'm sorry!"

"Sorry doesn't pay dead presidents!" He swung out a hand that hit me. I stumbled back, and then took off before he could swing again.

"Run boy, like your life depended on it! Because it does!" He called after me, "I will get my money! I'll find you!"

Blood ran from my lip, but I didn't care. I ran all the way home, because my life depended on it.

~~~~~
I burst through the front door, panting heavily as my shaky hands worked the locks. I turned around sharply, to see Harry sitting on the couch with a cup of tea.
He stood up sharply when he saw me, setting down his glass on the coffee table. I could tell he meant business, and not good business either.
"Niall! Where were you? I saw you left and I got worried sick! Why didn't you have your phone?" His tone was hard and direct, and I could tell he was mad at me.
I opened my mouth to say something, but he cut me off. "Niall! You're bleeding! What the hell happened to you?!" He walked quickly over to me, grabbed my hand in a stone hard grip as he drug me to the kitchen.
He practically shoved me into a chair while he got me a damp towel. He handed it to me, sitting across from me at the table. "I expect a reasonable answer Niall. Did you get in a fight with the press?, because you know the damage that could do us-"
I interrupted him, "I didn't hit anyone. Or hurt anyone." I said, dabbing at the blood on my lip. He scowled at me and I glared at him back.
"Then why are you bloody? Huh?" He said in a mocking tone, which pissed me off even more.
"Harry, I meant to tell you this, but I made a deal with a guy, and so I owed him money. Now I'm a thousand short and he's after me. And he threatened me. I'm pretty sure he knows where I live. It's bad, I know..." I began to continue, but Harry stood up and walked to the house phone.
I stopped.
"Simon?"
-pause-
"Yes."
-pause-
"Niall's in trouble, we need to get him out of here. Fast."
-long pause-
"Yes, I understand."
-pause-
"Okay, got it. I'm on my way." He hung up the phone and looked at me before walking over.
"Come on." His voice was monotone, which was very unusual for Harry. He grabbed my empty hand, pulling me out of the chair with a hard yank. It hurt, but my mind was swirling with other things.
"Where are we going?" I asked, following behind him as he drug us out the door, grabbing his phone and keys along the way.
He didn't answer as I was shoved into the passenger of the Land Rover, and driven away.
