Ch. 8

The alarm clock rang.

I groaned.

Dragging myself out of bed, I reached to the top of my drawer to close the alarm. I slipping out of the cozy confinements of my pajamas as I reluctantly took up my uniform, the novelty already lost on me, despite have only worn it once.

I brushed my hair that reached past my waist, taking longer than usual, I was just going to leave it straight as usual, but then the neglected hair accessories on the top of my drawer caught my eye. I picked a lace ribbon from a sparkling pile of neatly stacked hairpins, and silk hair bands, purposely choosing something that was more subtle and less gaudy in comparison to the rest of the spread display. I stepped in front of the bronzed full-length mirror to admire my new hairstyle, and I had to admit, I should probably tie my hair more often. It didn't look half bad, and even the side bangs that had escaped from the hair ribbon looked like they were natural. I smiled in satisfaction.

Today was the morning of the "Annual gathering." Funny how the name makes it sound like such an informal event, I sighed. In just one week, my hopes and expectations for a normal, happy school life had been shattered. Even though I eventually got around to controlling my powers and am able to block out the noise of other people's thoughts, I have still unconsciously gone out of my way to avoid people as much as possible. So I guess it's not surprising that I have yet to make a single friend. It's not that my powers are that unstable, it's just that I don't want to go through all the trouble just to maintain a companion that comes and goes. Furthermore, it seems that the Alex person from before is pretty popular, because in just a few short days, he is already constantly being surrounded by a crowd of people.

Despite myself, I had to wonder, were they also like me, drawn in by his haunting silver eyes?

Not to mention, there has been this typical preppy looking blonde girl always sticking to his side. Normally, I would just ignore that kind of girl, yet this time, I would feel a tinge of annoyance every time I would snatch a glance of them together.

I walked over to the full-length mirror, to make sure nothing was out of place. My hair was flowing like silk down my back, enveloping my shoulders like a velvet curtain. I didn't have a lot of jeweland the dress was a midnight blue that set in a nice contrast with my turquoise eyes. It was strapless, and the silk material hugged nicely to my small waist, the dress blossoming into dark blue folds reaching just above my knees. Besides my silver studs, the only jewelry I had was my usual Alexandrite necklace and a white lace ribbon cutely tied around my wrist.

It was sort of ironic though, because before I never thought that I would even care about this kind of event, and yet here was I, doing a final check in front of the mirror.

Grandmother and I arrived at the location it had took us a near one-hour drive to this distinguished someone's mansion. It was certainly a very impressive scene, the white mansion gleaming in the sun, standing on its grand stone columns. I stood obediently by grandmother's side as she warmly greeted the host and his wife, thanking them for providing the location to this year's annual gathering, and then introducing me,

"This is my granddaughter, Laurellele," and in a slightly more meaningful tone, "she is turning 14 this year."

I smiled and greeted the hosting couple politely, and in return they expressed how glad they were to meet me as the wife gave me a gracious smile.

We stepped into the immense back garden, the open spacious area already comfortably filled with people chatting. There were also people inside for there were stone stairs leading from the low first-floor balcony to the wide backroom. I quickly scanned my surroundings, and I could quickly see a bunch of familiar faces that have been accustomed to the front of magazines, ranging from fashion to business.
