I sat in my cozy looking office going through the piles and piles of paperwork that lay scattered on my desk. I sighed heavily as I took off my glasses then looked out the window. The sky was dark and gloomy, most people believed that the city of angels was all sunshine and rainbows. Well that was just a typical stereotype. Most days were sunny and cheerful, but you also had days like this one where you wanted to just crawl back in bed and stay there for the remainder of the day.
There was then a small knock on the door. I slipped my glasses back on as I straightened up "Come in." I said softly. My boss came in shutting the door behind him giving us privacy. Jeremy was the partial owner of the Gray & Hart detective agency. He like me would never get old, but hey at least he didn't have to hide who he really was from the rest of the world.
"What's wrong Layla?" Jeremy asked as if he could read my mind. I just sighed taking off my glasses again. "Homesick, What's wrong Jeremy?" I asked looking at him with my gray eyes. "I can't hide anything from you can I, Layla?" I just shook my head as I got up from my chair.
"You look beautiful today by the way way." He stated. In fey culture it was considered an insult if you didn't compliment someone who was obviously trying to be attractive. I actually dressed to cheer myself up this morning. I wore a bright red "V" neck tank top covered by a black button down sweater. My black skirt was short enough that if I had sat the wrong way I'd flash the top of my thigh highs which were complimented by my 3in bright red heels.
"I appreciate the compliment Jeremy now what's wrong?" I asked as I walked towards him, I knew something was up because he's rarely comes directly into my office unless there's something bothering him.
Jeremy just sighed and rubbed his eyes with his right hand as if he were tired "Turns out one of my most trusted friend, my best employee, was a Princess of the Sidhe all along.." I felt my chest tighten. I instantly knew who he was referring to, her name was Princess Meredith NicEssus she was my sister. I had to keep that a secret, which was why I fled the Unseelie court when she was born. I couldn't bear to watch her grow from child to woman, and not know who I truly was.
My father Prince Essus, Prince of Flesh, sent me pictures of her as she grew, but on the day Meredith turned 18 our father was murdered. I was there that day.. My father and I always met in secrecy by this big tree near the faerie mound. I was the only true witness to the murder of our father, I had no choice but to stay quiet about it for fear of my life.
If I wasn't immortal I wouldn't of survived that day... My hands of power were useless, the person who murdered my father was my own cousin Prince Cel, Prince of Old Blood. You see my full name is Princess Layla NicEssus, Princess of Blood and Darkness, and I thought I loved my cousin but now I hate him.. I vowed that day that when the time is right I will kill him with my own hands.
"Layla?" I heard Jeremy's voice, I blinked as if I'd been asleep, something must have shown on my face, because he looked at me with a worried look. "Layla... You're not just homesick are you?.." I just looked away, he touched my chin and made me look at him.
I sighed "Now come on Jeremy why would you think that?" I asked deliberately avoiding his question. The Sidhe don't lie, we may tell so much of the truth to the point where you think the moon is made out of cheese, but we don't lie.
Jeremy raised his eyebrow at that "You just avoided my question which is answer enough.. You're hiding something.." Damnit, Jeremy was my most trusted friend here, I shouldn't have to hide from him, Right?? I made up my mind as I took a deep breath.
"Okay Jeremy but you must swear to me that you won't mention this to anyone... especially Meredith.." A look must of crossed my face because he gently touched my cheek.
"I swear to you Layla, I won't tell anyone." He said as he laid his other hand across his chest, I closed my eyes as I nodded, and let my glamour that I held in place slip away.
