Chapter 1

Well, let’s start this by introducing myself.

”Jake!”

“Hey there, Mel.”

My name is Jacob Reed Russell. I am 19 years old, a weird introverted guy. I don’t quite look my age. I don’t have that ideal stature for a 19 year old guy. I am thin but hell I’m not weak. I am a black belter in judo and I have a 3rd degree black belt in taekwondo. I am physically fit but not that muscular. So enough on how I look like. I give up martial arts to find a job. Considering my age. Well, and considering my position now. I need to earn something. I can’t be someone like him.

Him. Pertaining to my father. He.. well.. let’s not talk about that.

“Hey, can you switch shifts with me?” I narrowed my eyes at her and she pouted her glossed lips. Too much pink gloss again Mel. Melinda is my friend, I guess. We sorta dated for like a week, so for me and for her… it kinda didn’t worked out. She had interests that I can’t give. Her ideals can’t be fulfilled with me. Plus, I can’t drag her into my problems.

“No way, your shifts ends at 10.” I grab my jacket and my bag from my desk. We’re at Roosevelt High. I am currently hanging onto my Senior High. I can’t barely attend classes due to circumstances that I guess I will explain later on.

“That’s why! Please just this once, Jakey!” She pouts again and clung onto my arm. I just stared at her with my usual expressionless face. She whine and whine as I drag my arm away from her vice grips. Wow this girl is strong. All those work might’ve gain her some super human strength. What am I saying? I shook my head and stood still. I rolled my eyes when she kept on nudging me.

“Before I say yes to this. What’s in it for me?” She looks like she is thinking about it then when the thought hit her she screamed. Stupid girl, gathering the attention of the class. Tsk. Thank God it’s dismissal and almost everyone got out of our room.

“Yes! Yes!” Tsk. She squealed again.

“Stop screaming!”

“Oh shush. If you take my shift, I will do you packed up projects that you always throw in your locker.”

Those projects are our requirement for graduation but I have no time to make them. I sighed and think for few seconds with her eyeballing me. I need to graduate and I think Mel wanted me too as well.

“Tell you what, How about I take your shift for two weeks and you do my projects AND my homeworks for two weeks.”

“WHAT!?”

“Deal?”

“NO WAY!” I laughed at her reddening face. Her face always turns red when she’s mad.

“Okay, but then you can’t have your quality time with Jason. How long since your last date? Let’s see…. Since never?” I know why she wanted to change shifts. Since she went out with her boyfriend they never had a date. Her boyfriend is an athlete. A baseball player to be exact and her part-time job and Jason’s games and practice always clash.

“FINE! Fine! I always do you damn homework anyway. A week okay! Your projects and ONE week of homeworks.”

“Two weeks!”

“One week or it’s no deal.”

“Tsk. Alright. I give up.” I swung my arm to wear my back pack.

“Thank you! You’re the best Jakey!” She jumped at me and engulfing me with her bear hug. She does that and it always never fails to choke me!

“Let GO!” “Oh you know you love me. Thank you Jakey! I’ll go tell Lhea!”

She went out running and screaming again. This girl… where does she gets all that energy? Oh yeah, Lhea is our store owner.

We both work in café library. It’s a library and also a café. It’s very convenient for me. I love books and the smell of coffee wakes me up. Sometimes it’s enough to let me forget that I’m tired. Exhausted from all this shits that I’m dealing with.

    *******************

I walk out of the school dragging my worn out pair of shoes. They are too small for my feet now. I can’t afford a new one. I have to save up. I walk few blocks down the street passing the bus stop. Just next to the antique store owned by a quiet old lady was Lhea’s small café. I work part-time there to pay for my school fees and to feed myself. Okay, I didn’t run away from home.

I was abandoned.

“Jake, come get this for me hun.” Lhea greeted me with a box. She literally shoved a huge box over me.

“Umpt! O-okay? What are these?”

Damn they’re heavy.

“It’s a package. Melinda just texted me that you will be having her shifts starting today.” Man, that girl is fast.

“Yeah.” I am still carrying this heavy box. Where should I place this? Before I ask the question, Lhea started pushing me towards the back way.

“W-wait..” Okay if I fall and die with this box, Lhea be better pay for my funeral.

“Careful,” Now you tell me. She at least open the door for me.

“Now place it here.” I place it down on the back of a pick-up truck.

“What’s in this box anyway?”

“Books.” She grin at me. They are definitely hardbound books. I massage my arm and stared at the man leaning by the truck.

“Lhea thank you.”

“No problem, Alex” Alex? He’s a tall man. He had a thick beard and he’s wearing an old cap hiding his long hair. What a weird guy.

“Oh yeah, Alex this is one of my employee, Jake. Jake this is Alex. He supplies us books.” Supplies? But why are we returning books back?

“Why do you need this old books, Alex? These are about to be recycled.” Lhea converse and I happen to be there. Ugh, I wanted to go back inside.

“Well, reference materials.” He grin and he had white teeth for a poor looking dude. Plus his physique is something. Without all the hair and the baggy shirt, I would mistake him for an athlete.

I lift my eyebrow when I notice he is staring at me. Oops, I guess he saw me staring at him. Look away.

“Uh, Lhea can I talk to you for a bit?” He said but he is still staring at me. Jeez!

Also, why is this the first time we met if he is the supplier here? Weird.

“Oh, okay. Jake come inside, tell Peter to fix the broken shelves and then go take over the counter.” I nod and went in.

“Uh, Pete!” I came by one of the employer and also a weird friend of ours. He is quite a nerd but he’s… I guess he’s okay. Just timid.

“Do you know this supplier named Alex?” He lift his thick glasses up and narrowed his eyes at me.

“You mean that bearded guy? I guess he’s the son of our supplier or something since I just saw him recently as well.” He said as he rearrange the books back in the shelves.

“Oh, okay. Oh yeah Lhea said to fix the shelf in the back.”

“Sure.”

No point in thinking about a weird supplier. Let’s start working.
