_______________
Blood dripped from the walls of the city; the usually-orange stones now stained a deep red. Arrows pieced the air and screams cut through the noise of battle. The flash of blades and the ringing of clashing swords resounded in Sabine's mind. War was upon Petra. The shielded city carved out of rock was surrounded and overtaken. Roman soldiers marched through the city, killing the innocent, their sneers and arrogant smiles taunting her. Sabine screamed as the nightmare continued. Feeling a hand tug her out of her sleep, Sabine gasped. Her brother, Ezra had awakened her and was gazing worriedly at her. She took a few dep breaths. It wasn't real, She kept telling herself, it was just a nightmare.
"What is wrong?" Her concerned brother asked, his hazel eyes gaping at her troubled form. "Why were you screaming?" He looked at her face, twisted from screaming and her eyes were red as if she had been crying. Her brunette hair was disheveled from tossing and turning during the night.
"N-Nothing," Sabine gasped.
His knowing eyes stared directly into her mind it seemed. "That's a lie, and we both know it."
She gazed downward, unable to look him in the eye. "I don't want to talk about it."
Ezra sat down on the bed beside her and squeezed her hand. "It was those dreams again, wasn't it?"
As a tear slipped from her eye, she wiped it away. "It was that horrible one. There was blood everywhere. Oh, Ezra-"She sobbed into his broad chest.
Her older brother was used to her crying on him and she loved him for his compassion. Her dreams – nightmares as she called them- had started when she was a child. At the beginning, they had been light dreams, with nothing frightening. As the years progressed, they had started to get worse and worse. Each nightmare was cut short when she awoke. They never finished. The part that scared her the most was not knowing the end. She squeezed his shoulders and continued sobbing. He stroked her hair, knowing she just needed time.
Sniffling, she sat up straight and wiped her red eyes. "Thank you, Ezra. You are the best brother."
"I know." He teased; he knew that she would be afraid to fall back asleep in case the nightmare came again, as it sometimes did. "Do you want me to stay, until you fall asleep again?"
She beamed at his kind offer, but she shook her head. "I am going to see if Luna is still awake." Her best friend was one of the few people outside of her family that Sabine trusted to tell about her nightmares. The full moon was high in the night sky as she walked the short distance to Luna's house. She walked to the back of the home and was about to throw a small pebble at Luna's window when a twig snapped behind her.
"Luna!" Sabine gasped as she turned around. "You scared three years life out of me."
"I'm sorry." When Luna saw her blood-red eyes, she immediately grew somber. "Was it the nightmares again?" She asked, her brown eyes glimmering with concern.
Sabine sighed heavily. "Yes. This was the worst one yet."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
Sabine sat silently for a moment, thinking. "It started out with blood dripping from the rocks. I could hear screams the sounds of war. People were dying! It was horrible." Her voice steadily rose until it broke into a sob. "I could feel their pain, their fear." She leaned onto her friend's shoulder, weeping as her friend tried to comfort her.
