The stink of human litter and animal dung permeated the dungeon cell; its stench hanging in the still air. Rats scurried around through holes in the rock walls, knocking their teeth in an insufferable manner. As Brynn' brown doe eyes glanced around at the other prisoners in the darkened cell, she shivered. Rain was pelting through the one small window near the ceiling of the cell, leaving the cell damp and many nearby soaked. She crouched closer to the corner that she was in; it was farther away from the window, and she was thankfully dry. She leaned her head back on the cold stone wall, thinking about the last day in Petra.

"Jesus was the Messiah." Brynn spoke to the woman near the center on town. Of the hundreds in the town square, this woman had chosen to speak to her. She had begun to ask questions about Brynn's actions, which led to a discussion on her faith. Brynn eagerly explained her faith, quoting parts of the few scriptures she had memorized several years before. The woman whose name was Camilla listened eagerly to Brynn's discussion.

"If Jesus was the Messiah, then his death...was for me?" She hesitated, not fully comprehending Brynn's words.

"Yes!" Brynn spoke excitedly. "He died on the Roman cross to be our sacrifice, but he has power over death, so he rose again on the third day. He died that we might live."

Before Camilla could respond, thundering hooves pounded into the town square. Chariots accompanied by foot soldiers began looting the town. Several soldiers started toward their direction. Camilla tensed and looked frighteningly at Brynn. "What do we do?"

Brynn's face held a strange sense of calm. "We have nowhere to run, so we must wait."

"But they will kill us!"

"Even though they have done this great evil, we must turn the other cheek." Brynn quoted from the book of Matthew.

"I don't completely understand this Christianity, but right now it seems crazy for you to sit and wait to be captured. I'm will at least fight for my life." Camilla turned and ran towards her townhouse, the knocking sounds on barricades being placed confirming her choice.

"May the mercy of God be upon you." Brynn turned away from Camilla and stumbled into several Roman soldiers. They snickered as they surrounded her.

"Ah, boys, we have one of the Followers of the Way." The ringleader sneered at Brynn's gasp. "There is no hiding it, we heard you."

"The Colosseum has been a bit empty of their 'games'." Another jeered.

"If you want to save yourself from the mouths of the lions or the tongue of fire, declare the emperor of Rome as God!" He commanded.

"I will not blaspheme my God and say the Emperor is God for he is not. He is but an earthly king given power by God." Brynn stated boldly, her blue eyes burning fiercely.

"You had your chance," one grunted before shoving her towards the rest.

The ring-leader forced her hands behind her back, securing them with a cord of rope. He knotted a lead rope around her neck and led her into a crowd of people. She willingly sat on the ground when they shoved her in front of the counting officer. "A Christian, sir," he spat.
