Facades and feelings

Making my way towards the dine area, I strolled to the table where I spotted my mother, her dark red hair easily noticeable. I neared the table to find her, surrounded by our lady guests, doing nothing productive unless gossiping is counted as it.

Time for the fake act.

"Hello my beautiful ladies" I beamed rather excitedly, all the ladies grinning ear-to-ear, including my mother.

"Look at your daughter, she's grown into such a gorgeous woman." One of the ladies who I assumed was Nina, gushed, feigning the same excited look as mine. I kissed her on the cheeks, and seated myself on the arm of my mother's sofa chair, hugging her sideways.

"Oh Delilah, when are you giving us the good news?" Another one inquired, narrowing her eyes playfully at me.

"Well, my parents here still aren't over their marriage even after 25 years of bearing each other. I don't think I have my chance anytime soon." I replied jokingly, my words hitting mother hard. We laughed for a bit, well, mine was fake, but laugh nonetheless. I hated to admit it, but my mother was quiet the sane one among these women.

It was almost 20 minutes of me being here, when I realised I shall take hold of my dear mother. On a totally unrelated note, is it possible for someone to sleep with both eyes open? Because I think I just pulled that off. Without even trying.

"-and he actually left her at the altar. Poor Stacy got her 4th marriage disaster in past 6 months" Poor Stacy's bitching was the last of what I heard, before I decided to interrupt the very interesting gossip session.

"Ladies, I would love to sit all day here with you, but I recall I got some business with my mother here. So, if you would excuse us.." I trailed off, nudging my mother lightly and getting off the arm.

If I wasn't mistaken, I actually saw an expression washing over my mother's face upon hearing my words, and it was close to relief.

"Women, please continue, I will be gone just a few. " Mother excused herself politely, linking her arm with mine.

I said no words on the way, until I reached my suite. Locking the door after me, I dropped the facade, my mother already seated at the plush cushion across me.

"How long have you known?" I went straight to the point, finding no sense in beating around the bush. My mother looked puzzled, but relaxed nonetheless.

"You will have to elaborate. I don't"-

"Father and Steve Moore. I saw them today. Well, captured them too, in case you denied knowing about them which I know is an utter lie so cut whatever crap excuse that you're going to give and start speaking."

My mother was shocked at first, not knowing how to comprehend this bomb that I've dropped on her. I gave her the time to get the words through knowing this wasn't something she deserved even if she was a bitch to me half the time. Eventually, she did get back to her stoic face.

"I won't deny. I do know about them. I also know, it's nothing serious. You got nothing to worry about."

"Oh bull. I thought my father was an arsehole and that is it. Never took him for a pathetic lying dick to be hon"-

"Your father never lied to me. He has been a dick, yes, but he has never lied to me. He confessed to me about his sexuality months before our engagement and as I told you, it's not a matter of your concern. Now, if your interrogation is over I would like to join my guests." Mother got up immediately, straightening her silver gown, walking towards the door, when I abruptly caught her by the arm.
