Flowers

I looked out over the unkempt field. Beautiful wildflowers grew at random and the grass was not cut. The sun started its way back down to the horizon, so it was a good time to watch the clouds. I went close to the center and laid down. I closed my eyes and felt the light breeze. I heard birds chirping and bees buzzing. I listened to animals making their way through the field.

I sighed in content and opened my eyes. I looked at the puffy clouds and imagined what shapes they created. The grass tickled my face and I let out a small sneeze and sat up. I looked around and saw a bunny hopping around. I saw bugs flying from flower to flower. The best sight, though, was the grass flowing in the wind. It looked like waves. The flowers, bringing beautiful spots of color to the dull grass, leaned with the wind.

I sat there just watching and thinking. My only moments alone were spent in that field every day. I needed the quiet to clear my mind. I closed my eyes again and fell back. I stretched out my arms and relaxed. The breeze carried the smell of the flowers. A sigh escaped my lips.

Suddenly I hear footsteps. I ignore them, already knowing who it was. The person laid down next to me and breathed in. We laid there in silence a bit before I started the conversation, "How was your day?" He answered immediately, "Stressful, why is college so hard?"

I laughed and shook my head. "that's life," I responded. We went quiet again enjoying each other's company. I smiled as I heard him sneeze. "You sound like a small kitten."

"Shut up freckle face," he said rolling over to look at me. I did the same to face him.

I stared into his blue eyes and smiled. He smiled back. "What is your favorite type of flower?" he asks me.

I thought for a moment, "Daisies or Lilys I guess, why"

He smiled big and suddenly say up, his ponytail slightly coming out. Some of his brown hair fell in his face as he looked at me. "Those are nice flowers! They are almost pretty as you," he said as he winked at me.

I sat up blushing. "What are your favorite flowers?" I asked. He looked at me smiling, " I like daffodils." He looked up at the sky. I looked at the grass and started to pull some out. It was nice and quiet when my alarm went off. I flinched and grabbed my phone. "I have to go to class, see you later," I said later.

He nodded and stood up too. "Let me walk you there," he said brushing off some dirt. I smiled and nodded. We both walked to my class.

~Time Skip to the last year of college~

I heard a knock on my door and got up from studying to answer it. "Hello," I said opening the door, "Alex?! I thought you were in class."

"Yeah, Mr. W let me get out early because I finished all my work," He said holding something behind his back.

"Why? I thought you really liked that class" I asked tilting my head in confusion.

"Umm," he started to fidget with the thing behind his back, "I had something really important to ask you."

"Okay, do you want to come it then?" I asked opening the door more.

"It's fine, Um," He showed me the beautiful bouquet of flowers he had hidden behind his back.

I looked at him and he asked, "Would you like to go on a date with me tomorrow?"

I stared at him in shock. "R-really?" I asked.

He looked at the floor nodding. I took the flowers and looked at the Lilys and Daisies bound together with a sea green ribbon. "yes," I said looking up at him.

He looked up at me with a huge smile. "Really?!" he asked. I nodded and he hugged me. I held out the flowers so they wouldn't get crushed. he let go and said, "Meet me at the field, same spot, at 8:05 pm. okay?" I smiled and said, "Okay"

He ran down the hallway waving bye. I smiled and closed the door. I smelled the flowers and put them in a vase.

~Time Skip to four years later~

Four years and we are still together. We got an apartment and a German Shepard. All was well and we were happy. I worked at a flower shop and Alex worked for a publishing company. I got home late one night. I opened the door and called out to let Alex know I was home. I walked out of the entry to see a small walkway of Daisies.

I followed the trail to our bedroom. I opened the door. It was dark the only lights were candles. and I saw Alex standing there. The floor was covered with Lilys. I looked at the bed to see many bouquets of Lilys and Daisies. "I hope these are still your favorite flowers," He said looking at me. "Oh Alex, this is wonderful!" I said walking over to him. I stood in front of him as he got down on one knee.

He pulled out a black box. I gasped and put a hand to my mouth. He opened it and said, "John, I've known you since third grade. You've helped me through everything and never left me. You are the only person who can make me speechless. I hope you stay by my side for the rest of our lives. Will you do the honor of marrying me?" "YES!" I yelled and hugged him.

Only then did I see the ring as he put it on his finger. I gasped, "How did you afford this?" I asked looking at it. It looked like a flower in a way small diamonds were everywhere on it. A big one on the top. It was absolutely gorgeous.

"I've been saving up for two years, I've worked overtime and other small jobs. That's why I always came home so late." He said helping me up.

"Oh Alexander, you really didn't have to," I said.

"I wanted to my dear," he said kissing my forehead.

"I love you, Alex," I said hugging him.

"I love you too John," he said hugging back.
