Feet pounding against the pavement; sweat dripping down from my foreheads; I am exhausted, and I don't know if I can continue. Practicing since four am., we have been working our butts off to prepare for the competition, today, at two pm.
After our five minute break, which in my opinion, was not long enough to gain back the stamina I've lost, we got back into formation to start again. At the moment of execution, the song was interrupted by the sound of wheels rolling against the cement.
Could it be her?
I turned around, as did we all, and looked at the source of the familiar noise. It was indeed her, and she looked beautiful as ever. The way she looked exquisite without trying; the way her aura had a mysterious glow to it; and the way her face is formed to hide all the sadness behind her eyes with a barrier.
I can tell she's been through a traumatic event and wanted to hide her pain, but, there's no use in concealing if your actions tell otherwise.
Her hesitation to enter the gate was show enough.
With thirteen people to look at, she chose to zero in on me, and me only. But, why?
What did I do?
Instead of entering, she left and skated down the road, around the corner, and out of sight. She's usually the one to arrive first, so I guess it was surprising to see we had beat her to it.
She's routinely here everyday, practicing, I'm guessing for a skate boarding competition. I heard there was one next week. Maybe it's that one.
I just wonder why she didn't come in.
-----------------
"Why didn't she come in?" a younger one said.
"Maybe she was intimidated by our shining awesomeness." said the punny one.
"No. Just no." another one said, shaking his head in disapproval.
"Hey, I'm just trying to shine my diamond here, so if you can't handle it, then slip your way over to the other side of this park cause I got a few more dollars up my sleeve, if you get what I'm saying." replied the second one, with a teasing smile on his face.
Silence escaped from his mouth as the third boy closed his eyes, keeping his posture, and walked away from his friend. Instead of speaking, he was cursing him out in his head, as he didn't want to anger his fellow member and start a fight. With the competition later today, teamwork mattered more than ever, even if it did include resisting the urge to hit someone with a guitar.
-----------------
A windy breeze shook the trees and their multi-colored leaves all around the neighborhood. The skate park, where the thirteen boys and one girl often occupied, is located in a relatively open field of grass, with a limited amount of buildings nearby. There is only one entrance to the park with a gate as a barrier, encircling the park, and keeping the place safe if anything were to happen.
There is a playground structure, but no one has been on it in two years. She didn't have the strength to journey down memory lane, and the boys were creeped out by how this empty place held an empty structure, when there were clearly houses less than a mile away, practically walking distance. Despite this understanding and strange fact, the two subjects continued to arrive daily, as it was the only place that fit the criteria needed as a training ground for their respective competitions.
Like a stage, there were two separate performances. One was a skill and trick show, where the skater girl displayed her technique and style in an eye-pleasing way that would capture the audience's attention and move hearts with the delicate movements of a depressed board. The other was a sing and dance concert, where thirteen boys would gain hearts and show off their talent in composing and choreographing, in addition to telling a story through their voice and body.
One was a solo artist while the other was a group effort. They worked differently, and had different reasons for their passion. Whether it was to make their dream shine, or to accomplish something for a loved one, all fourteen had a burning passion inside themselves to keep going, and never give up.
