Preface

On the late September night, when Dr. Thomas Caldwell drove from work, he saw a small girl sitting on the curb. He slammed on the brakes and got out of his car.

“Are you ok? Where are your parents?" he asked her.

“Dead." she said quietly.

He studied her carefully. If her parents were dead who was taking care of her? She had a small bag straped on her back, and her hair and clothes were filthy.

“Are you living alone?" he asked quietly.

She nodded a little.

“Will you come to my house, so I can at least get you cleaned up and fed?" he asked her. She was so thin, it scared him.

She nervously nodded, and followed him to the car.
