chapter 5

When I woke up, two people were looking over me. I took in some air and suddenly had water dunked all over me. I gasped.

" She's awake!" Noni cried. " You fainted last night and wouldn't wake up all morning. I saved you some of my goats meat though."

She handed me three juicy pieces, my stomach grumbled and I stuffed them in my mouth, savouring every last bit of flavour.

Noni smiled. " Do you want to play some ball with me and my friends?"

She introduced me to each and every one of them. " This is Abaeze,he's 10, Ilukwe, she's 12 and their brother and sister."

They gave a polite smile, Ilukwe had a gentle voice and was quite thin but she had dry legs and elbows. Abaeze was handsome but he didn't take losing well and ended up throwing a tantrum in the corner.

Noni and I volunteered to go and take care of the babies because a lot of the staff didn't work on Sundays because of church.

The babies were very sweet and I bumped into the Little girl who thought I was her mama again.

This time she didn't throw her arms around me, instead, she handed me something wrapped in tissue with a gigantic smile on her face.

" My name's Imagie! There is a picture of my new family in there! Look!"

I carefully opened it and looked. A small lady with brown hair and a lovely face stood there, with a tall man with mahogany brown hair, then there was a little girl with strawberry blonde hair with a cheeky grin on her face which was so wide, he eyes stretched.

" I can't wait for them to get here! They write to me all the time but I can't read too well. But they said I'm going to get a good edu- edu... educat..."

" Education?" I said.

" Yeah! You're smart aren't you?"

I laughed because, even though I didn't go to school anymore, people still always said that.

Noni and I fed and played with the little children until late. They all fell asleep, tucked together. Imajie had the picture wrapped in tissue  and held it close to her chest.

I beamed.
