The stairway at the end of the hallway was grand, the railings were gold leafed and the steps layered in deep pile red carpet. Daniel was wary that people could still be in his home, he proceeded with caution. He took the knife back off his ankle strap and wielded it anxiously in his right hand. Every step he took towards the stairway made his hands shake faster. A creak came echoing from up the stairs, it stopped soon after, it could have been the radiators or a person.
He placed his foot onto the first step of the stairway and began to climb upwards, he took each step slowly and attempted to put most of his weight onto the railings as to make as little noise as possible. He eventually made it to the top to be welcomed by the familiar site of his upstairs landing. It appeared as if nothing had changed, a Blue and white china vase stood on an oak table next to the bathroom door, a large oil painting hung at the end of the hall and a Bust of himself from many years ago sat in a cove in the wall on the right.
Daniel stood there taking in the surroundings, he studied the area for any sign of a struggle between the kidnappers and his security team that should have been there. There was nothing. Daniel took a step forward to try and go to his bedroom to look for any information there, as he stepped though the ground below him started to creak it sounded exactly like the creak he had heard earlier when he was downstairs. Daniel lifted his knife up to chest height, and continued on towards the door to his room.
He grabbed onto the doorknob and twisted it quickly, he threw himself through the door in case he could take an assailant by surprise, and perhaps have an advantage. He turned to the right to look around the room, was there anyone in there?
Daniel stopped dead. His heart skipped a beat. He dropped the knife to the ground.
On the four post, king sized bed lay his daughter, blood dripping from a wound on her head and the sheets surrounding stained with blood.
Daniel's body slumped to the ground with a thud and his vision went black.
