The term "bisexual" was first recorded in 1824. It was used (as original meanings of words usually are) in a very different way then it's used now.
It was originally an adjective and a biology term for "having the organs of both sexes in one being" (as in "being hermaphroditic").
It began to be used to mean "attracted to both sexes" in 1914 (in ye olde days before the distinction of romantic vs sexual attraction or the recognition of other genders).
The word first really started being used/recognized as a noun in the modern(ish) sense in 1922, though it didn't come into general use until the 1950s.
