Luke, I gotta tell you something, man," Michael sighed heavily through his words as he plopped himself onto the dilapidated sofa of Luke's sister's second living room. Luke raised his eyebrows but didn't avert his attention from the strings of the acoustic guitar he was tuning. Michael was slightly annoyed by the lack of proper acknowledgement from Luke, for the weight of his announcement was too heavy to not have his full attention.

"Luke, pay attention to me...!" Michael whined and dragged out his words as to annoy the boy with the instrument. Luke ran his hands over the cords on the guitar before taking it off of his lap and gingerly leaning it against the chair he was seated in. Meeting the colorful-haired boy's gaze with a dead look, he replied.

"Hmm?"

Michael swallowed, meeting Luke's gaze. He was the slightest bit nervous about dropping the news on him. But they were best friends, were they not? Luke would surely understand.

"I, so, you see..." Michael struggled to find the right words. He laughed softly under his breath to himself at how foolish he was, being nervous around his best friend of nearly four years. He decided to lay it all out on the table. His distressed voice sounded the words he never wanted to speak. "I'm not graduating this year." Michael licked his lips as his words tumbled out rapidly. "But, it's not my grades. There's this program they've put me in and, uh, basically I volunteer all summer and give some shitty written report in the fall and I'll get an automatic bump-up. I'm not stupid I'm just - this program will help and... I wanted to let you know. I'm scared; I haven't told my parents yet."

A shaky sigh escaped Michael's mouth, but he didn't break contact from his best friend's eyes. He didn't expect a poor reaction, Luke never was the kind of guy to make another feel lousy. Just as he predicted, Luke's eyebrows drew together lightly, showing his concern but not disapproval.  A corner of Luke's mouth turned up slightly and he shrugged his shoulders.

"I guess we're both writing papers this summer then, huh?"

Michael smiled and tackled his best friend to the floor, beacuse he now knew that he wasn't going to be the only one earning back school days.
