Chapter Eleven: Catching Feelings

"Man. That Draco Malfoy is a real piece of work. He's like the Donald Trump of the wizarding world."

This comment was made the day after the party. Nora and I were sitting outside her house at the picnic table with our books out and notepads open, jotting down notes as we read together.

"Wait until you meet Lucius Malfoy. He'll make Draco look like a puppy in comparison," she said back.

I glanced over at the garden beside us. Nora wasn't joking about their garden. From what I could see, there were all kinds of fruits and vegetables growing here; potatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, eggplants, corn. There was probably more growing in the small greenhouse too but I couldn't see inside it. It was a very impressive garden. Even the chickens and goat impressed me.

"What if we did a model of Hogwarts? We can use clay or something. It's cheap and easy to make," she suggested.

"You do realize Hogwarts is a castle, right? Think of all the work we'd have to put into to it to make it look realistic. Let's do something more simple." I slammed my fist down on an ant that was crawling past my book. "How about we make a spoof of the movie? Hurry Pooter and the Kidney's Stone."

Nora giggled. "No! I refuse to spoof such a legendary piece of literature and film. I'll pass, thank you. Maybe we can act out a quick scene in front of the class?"

"Good freaking luck with that," I snorted. "I'd rather stick that garden hose down my throat and drown myself."

At the mention of drowning, we both suddenly grew really quiet. She never brought up the party and I didn't mention it, thinking it would rude to do so. She'd talk to me about it when she was ready.

"Is that squash you got growing over there?" I pointed to a section of the garden next to the potatoes where something green was growing.

"Yup. That's squash. We used to have watermelons growing there but they wouldn't grow for some reason. My mom moved them beside the green beans." Nora opened up a pack of raisins and poured them into her mouth. "The strawberries are all mine. I sell them to the neighbors when they're ripe enough to pick."

I nodded. "Cool. I don't have the patience to grow a garden. Tried it with that bean thing we had to do in third grade. Didn't work out in the end."

She snickered, probably imagining a 9 year old me getting pissed off at a bean seed. "I used to be the same way until my mom taught me that patience offers great rewards."

"Smart lady." I picked up my book and stared blankly at the pages. The words became jumbled and my mind wandered off to another dimension entirely. "You know what's weird? The only time I can ever read a book is when it's an audiobook."

Nora nodded. "I know a lot of people like that. They can't read the book themselves but they get just as much out of an audiobook the same way people do when they read it with their eyes. No difference, really."

The patio door slid open and Nora's mom came out carrying a tray of fruit and lemonade. "Thought you girls might be hungry. How's the project coming along?"

"It's....coming," Nora sighed. "We can't decide what kind of project we want to do. Trying to find one we both agree on is a project all by itself."

Mary stroked her chin. "Why not a video of some sort? Nora likes to read out loud. Laney likes to make videos. So why not combine both of your talents together?"
