Morning Tea
I woke up at 5:28 am. Five twenty-eight AM!! I tried to go back to sleep but by the time I woke up I was freezing my ass off so I just padded my way to the kitchen and started some tea. I sat in silence, staring at the clock on the microwave until I realized I could taste my own breath and went to brush my teeth. I didn’t want to wake Melody so I brought my toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash, and hair brush to the bathroom in the loft.
On the way downstairs I heard the tea kettle whistling its pitchy, refreshing song. As I was pouring it my phone buzzed in my sweatpants pocket. It was from an unknown number but as I read it I felt my stomach do some hardcore acrobatics. I held my stomach for support and unlocked my phone to read the entirety of the message.
Hey it’s Jesse, from the park yesterday. I was just texting you because, little did I know, my room is directly across from yours (as in like 6 feet away from your window…) your light is on and it’s really bright. But it’s cool, once I’m up I’m up. If you’d be interested in repaying me for the 5 hours of sleep I’m missing, meet me outside at 6. We can watch your first sunrise here in Phoenix. I promise you won’t be disappointed. J
I looked at the clock, 5:46.
I sprinted to my room and hurriedly got dressed. I threw on a black push up bra, a thin, white crop top, and a light black soft-as-fuck hoodie on over it. I kept my black sweats on, they were too warm and cozy to take off, and slid into some black vans.
5:50
My hair looked fine, messy, but it was pretty long so I brushed through it one more time. I washed my face and slapped, some mascara and ran back to the kitchen.
5:55
I quickly poured half of the hot water into two cups and let the tea bags steep. I added a bit of honey to each cup and capped them. I stuffed my phone in my bra and made my way outside. Looking back quickly at the clock at it turned from 6:00 to 6:01
There he was waiting by my mailbox, looking expectantly at his phone. I then realized I never texted him back. When he turned around to see me, he looked somewhat relieved that I hadn’t blown him off. And even happier when he saw the cups.
“Coffee?!” He said giddily.
“Hahaha peppermint tea. Here’s yours, it’s got honey in it.”
“Sweet,” he said taking a sip. “It tastes great, thanks Hazel.”
I smiled up at him. He stood about 6 foot, 6’1” maybe? Which was great for me because standing 5’7 not all guys are actually taller than me.
He led me down the direction of the park. I figured we would keep going, maybe to some secluded area of the desert, or a secret oasis. But he repositioned his tea in his hand and climbed up the giant jungle gym. I was puzzled, so I stopped at the base of it. He climbed up effortlessly to the top, without spilling a drop of tea. He looked down knowingly at me. “Scared of heights?” He said, offering a hand to me. I scoffed and laughed out loud at this. This boy obviously doesn’t know who he’s dealing with. I steadied my tea and climbed up gracefully, plopping down next to him. He grinned at me, “Good. Well this is it… Sorry it’s not like a secluded little oasis in the desert or something. We live in a subdivision, soo…” I rolled my eyes, “Challenge accepted.” I thought. I was really good at discovering and exploring hidden gems, it was a gene I inherited from Melody. I scooted closer to him and looked out into the sunrise.
Subdivision my ass!! The jungle gym was only but 8 feet high or so, but the flat terrain of Arizona was visible for what seemed like miles and miles. I felt myself getting lost in the beauty, one of my favorite feelings. “It’s brilliant.” I murmured.
We sipped tea and talked about nothing and everything for what felt like forever, but I felt my phone vibrate in my bra and noticed that it was half past ten. I had been four and a half hours. Four and a half hours?!? “Woah!” I interrupted myself, talking about I don’t remember what, “We’ve been up here for four and a half hours!” As reality started to seep back in, I felt my ass had long since gone numb and my cup empty. I was craving some strawberries, maybe a smoothie.
“Damn… sorry, I kind of lost track of time. Do you wanna uhh, head back?” He asked.
“Uhm yeah, what time do you have to be home by?”
“Midnight.”
I laughed, I had the same, stupid, easily breakable curfew. “Soo, you don’t need to head home, at all?”
“Not in the near future.” He replied.
“Hmm, well, you wanna meet Melody? She could probably make some smoothies or something.”
So we headed back to my house. Melody had written a note saying her boss called her into work today, most likely until 6 so she suggested I go exploring the area as I usually would. Basically, I had the house to myself. She left $200 on the fridge, in case I wanted to go shopping or eat out.
Now, I'm not entirely innocent, pretty slutty when I want to be actually, but selectively slutty, and I have fooled around with guys when Melodys out, but for some reason this one was different, I didn't feel like fooling around just yet.Jesse had a nervous, unsure look in his eyes, it seemed something like “While I would love to hook up with you, I feel like we just got to know each other. I like you, a lot, I feel like I’m really getting to know you, I would fuck you, but I honestly just wanna get to know you more… and more… and more.” If I'm correct, the feeling is mutual, god I wish I could tell him these things. I wish I could phrase them in a less pathetic way. But I don’t feel like going through that struggle right now, so I keep my mouth shut.
As if reading my mind, he says, “Soo, what do you wanna do…?” No response from me “I mean like we could go to the movies down the road from the entrance to the neighborhood, or go to the street market, its only open till 2 I think, ooor, we could just sit here and chill. Umm, we could make out, if that’s the kind of thing you’re into, but if we do, you should know that I like you. And if you totally ignore me afterwards, I’ll be really upset and will make sure your house gets infested with ants or roaches, or both! So that you have to move…”
He said this as if he was telling a story of a mundane event that had happened yesterday. I was so confused at first, like, did I just hear this right? But then he cracked a smile. I couldn’t tell which part he was joking about, the making out, the liking me, the possible ant infestation, all three??
So I said, “Uhh. How about the street market?”
