warning: Daichi is kind of a bitch but I love him so no hard feelings. Also, this doesn't follow the Little Mermaid story exactly. Sorry.

The orange merman clutched the fork in his hand tightly. Well, he didn't really know that is was a fork.
To him, it was just a foreign object from the humans, and Hinata loved collecting things from the humans. No matter how many times his little sister who he took care of, Natsu, told him that the king wouldn't like it, he refused to listen. How could he not find these things fascinating? They were so unlike the things they had down underwater.
Not only that, but Hinata would give anything to be able to live on land, just for a day. The amount of seconds he spent fantasizing about walking on land like a human would probably add up to years. The king, Daichi, always told him that he shouldn't stay at the surface of the water, but Hinata, again, never truly listened. Even when Suga, the other king (and Daichi's spouse) told him that it would be better if he stayed close to the ones who loved him.
His orange hair flailed as he swam as fast as he could to his friend, Noya, to ask him what the object was. Noya was always there to tell him the names of all the interesting objects he found. Hinata wondered how he could possibly be knowing all this, but he never questioned it. Nishinoya was always super cool, and Hinata never questioned it.
When he found Noya, he came to a halt, surprising the boy.
"Noya!" Hinata cried, shoving the object in the other boy's hands. "I found another one. What is this one called? It's pointy, see?" Noya laughed.
"Ha! What's up? Yeah, I know what this is," he replied as he examined the object. "It's a dinglehopper! You use it to comb your hair!" Hinata's eyes lit up as he took the object back, looking at it closely. He ran his pointer finger on the points of the dinglehopper, grinning from ear to ear before running it through his orange head of hair.
"Wow," Hinata muttered amazingly. "A dinglehopper? I'm totally adding this to my collection!" Noya beamed.
"Yep! Have fun! I'm on my way to see Asahi, so I gotta go. Bye!" Noya said and swam away, his black tail swaying side-to-side. Hinata barely noticed, already on his way to his secret cave. Natsu had just barley caught up to the boy.
"Brother! Slow down!" she said childishly. Hinata just smiled in embarrassment and scratched his cheek.
"Sorry. I guess I got a little too excited. Come on! Noya told me that this is a dinglehopper," he said. He gave the thing to Natsu so she could look at it on her own while they swam, much slower this time. They were on their way to the cave where Hinata kept all of his human stuff. Collecting all of them was a hobby, really.
Okay, so maybe he had a bit of an obsession with humans, but it wasn't his fault! He was never allowed to do anything fun. He was expected to stay under the water when there were so many amazing things bubbling on the surface. It wasn't like he had ever been on land, nor was he going to. Secretly, he really wished he had human legs, but you probably already knew that.
As they swam inside, Hinata plucked the object back from Natsu.
"Wow! That's so cool!" Natsu said. Of course she would agree. She looked up to her older brother, after all.
"I know, right? I'll put it next to the thingamabobs," Hinata said, placing it down. It looked so perfect altogether. He felt silly for acting like such a fangirl.
"Brother, weren't you supposed to do something today?" asked Natsu as she tugged on his orange tail. Hinata cocked his head and tapped a finger to his chin, trying to think. Suddenly, he let out a gasp as he made a horrified face.
