Hinata's feet pounded on the ground. He heard footsteps behind him, but the pounding in his head almost drowned out the noise. He heard Noya yell out some instructions, but he hadn't registered them.
It was so stupid that they had done it. Why had they done it?
In the adrenaline, Hinata had forgotten that he was tired, and took in a huge gulp of air as the stitch in his side tightened. He grunted in pain before he lost his footing, tripping and falling onto his knees.
He knew they had been torn up. The jagged rocks on the ground had no doubt cut into his knees as blood seeped out and painted the rocks red. Hinata looked down at it, almost mesmerized. It was so surreal. He would have felt the pain if he had time to. The adrenaline was still pumping through his veins. He felt a hand on his shoulder, and whipped his head around to meet the eyes of Noya. His eyes were dull, almost black in the night. A soft glow of white surrounded him as the moon hung in the sky behind him.
"Shouyou! We have to keep running!"
Hinata nodded, looking behind him for a second, stomach clenching when he saw nobody else.
"Shouyou, come on!" It was Kenma this time. Hinata breathed in before pushing himself back up and sprinting towards the town. How long had they been running? 30 minutes? An hour? It felt like years Hinata had started running, and even if he had ran almost every morning for most of his life, fatigue was at a steady pace right behind him.
The 3 ran and continued to run until they saw the relieving sights of familiar light. Torches being lit up by the village. He heard Noya make a noise of relief when it came into their view.
They all stumbled to a stop, bending over and catching their breaths. Sure, they were here.
But not everyone else was.
In sync, the 3 of them turned around together, eyeing the black abyss of the night they had just arrived from. All of them prayed that the rest of their friends Kuroo, Asahi, Yamaguchi, Tsukishima and Kageyama would come running back after them.
The trio had been separated from the rest of the group in their chase and none of them knew who-or if any of them-would make it back.
A group of adults ran up to them and Hinata was swept into his mother's arms. She had tears trickling down her cheeks and Hinata's stomach tightened in guilt.
"Shouyou!" she cried, just as Kenma and Noya's parents caught them in hugs as well. He saw the other's families approaching with worried looks on their face.
"Where's my son?"
Hinata cried out, the guilt and fatigue finally catching up with him as he sobbed. His mother clung to him as he buried his face in her chest, his hands wrapped tightly in the back of her yellow dress.
"Shouyou, my darling," she sniffed. "Where had you gone? We were so worried!"
"Mom," he gulped, backing away. He looked at the cobblestone beneath their feet. "Th-The woods. We went and..." He couldn't finish if he tried. It was no trouble, as Nishinoya did it for him.
"There was a witch!" he yelled. Even now, Noya wasn't crying and neither was Kenma. They looked upset, but the 2 older males were strong. Hinata, however, was not. He hated himself for it and wiped at his eyes, nails digging into his palms until they bled.
His mother's eyes went wide as she stepped back, a hand covering the gasp that came out of her mouth.
"Shouyou! We told you!"
The entire group turned quickly as they heard incoming footsteps. Footsteps as loud and fast as the trio before them was. Hinata counted the boys as they ran past him.
