Note:
Jade's P.O.V
I was so mad about what Derek said that I skipped fourth period. I knew that what he said wasn't true, because I know myself well enough. While I was sitting in the staircase, though, I kept thinking that maybe I wasn't so secure with who I was and that's why I flew off the handle. I was deep in thought when suddenly I heard someone call my name. "Jade!" my friend Christopher called. He came down the steps. "What's up?" I aksed. "Don't you have class?" he responded, not really answering the question. "Um, look that's not important. Let's just talk, about anything." I said urgently.
Christopher seemed a little taken aback. "Ok. I heard you got the lead in the school play." he said. I smirked. "Would you believe that that's actually the last thing I want to talk about?" I said. Christopher's eyebrows furrowed. "Of course not. What happened?" he asked.
"It's just that the guy who's playing Romeo was being a total jerk to me this morning." I said. Christopher's hands balled into fists.
For as long as I'd known Christopher, he'd always been willing to protect me. Bullies, lethargic losers who tried to pull me down into the gutter, the whole lot. We dated briefly in ninth grade, but after a while we decided that we were better off as friends and still maintain a good relationship.
So it was no surprise to me when Christopher's hands ballled into fists. "Don't worry, Jade, I'll sock it to him." He said.
I cracked up.
"What?" he asked.
"Sock it to him? Reallly? Who SAYS that anymore?" I asked.
Christopher acted hurt; like he was trying to defend himself.
"Lots of people." he replied with a little kid voice. I stood up and folded my arms. "really? Who?" I asked. Christopher put on an intellectual pose and acted like he was thinking.
"Oh! Bob," he said, as if we knew a Bob.
"We don't know a Bob." I replied. Christopher smirked. "Yes we do. You've just never met him." he said.
"But that makes no-----" my sentence took second place to laughing as he tickled me in a surprise attack.
After I finally fought him off, we stood there catching our breaths.
"Well, well, well. Is this the face she usually makes before she drops to her knees?" Derek asked, smirking.
I instantly straightened, embarassed for not knwoing he was there earlier.
"Shut up, ok? Enough with all this rumor crap. For someone whp's so against it, you don't seem like you are."
I picked up my bag and walked to the staricase door.
Christopher, I'd assumed, had probably went back to class because when he saw me he had a bathroom pass in his hand. As my hand was on the knob, Derek's voice stopped me from moving another step.
"He jests at scars that never felt a wound."
I froze. Act 2, scene 2 of Romeo and Juliet. The famous balcony scene. I turned to face him. His face looked so earnest, his eyes boring into mine.
I wondered if he could tell that he made an effect on me.
Finally I found my voice.
"Last time I checked, I wasn't joking." I said. He grinned. He came a bit closer to me, walking with his head down at first, his eyes glimmering at me when he raised his head.
."Ok, point taken." he replied.
We stood there for a minute, having an awkward silence. Then he held his head up and looked at me again, as if he didn't know what to say.
