Blaeyde stood at the flight deck of the mothership, waiting to meet her team for the first time and board the ship that would carry them to the planet they had waited so long to explore. The name of the planet, given to it by the board of directors and scientists of the iron sparrow fleet was XT-34, the letters and numbers representing its location in the vastness of space.
Blaeyde was bursting with excitement, ready to make the long journey. The ship that would carry them to their assigned planet contained all the necessities for them to set up a base camp on the alien world and survive for ten years and in that time be able to sustain their supplies and become self-sufficient. Blaeyde could hardly wait to get to the planet.
She heard footsteps behind her and turned to see none other than the cranky and snappy doctor S. Sharp walking up to the same launch platform and toting a huge bag of what Blaeyde could only guess was medical equipment. Blaeyde silently prayed that the other girl would divert to a different launch platform at the last second, but to no avail. S. Sharp walked at a steady pace in one direction towards the exact same launch platform as Blaeyde. Blaeyde just smiled at her and said, "Are you lost?"
"Excuse me? This is the launch platform I was assigned to. What exactly are YOU doing here?" The young doctor said.
"Same thing as you, I'm afraid, so we may as well get along. You're going to be spending possibly the rest of your life with me." Blaeyde said with a smirk. If she had to share the mission with this girl, she figured she should make the most of it. Thankfully, the argument was short-lived when a tall girl probably around eighteen years old with frost-blue and purple hair tied up in two ponytails and wearing large aviator goggles walked down to launch platform. What was it with the girls these days and genetically altering their hair color?
The new girl carried herself with poise and maturity with every step, as well as a slight air of authority. It was obvious that she would be the team leader because of her specialized uniform. S. Sharp saluted the new girl immediately, while Blaeyde tried not to laugh at their formality.
"Come on, you two! This is a launch mission, not a funeral! What's there not to be happy about here?" Blaeyde said casually.
"This may not be a funeral, but we are saying goodbye to our lives, hopes, and dreams to go on this stupid mission that we may never come back from. How can you be practically throwing a party about this?" The doctor said solemnly.
Blaeyde rolled her eyes and said, "Lighten up!"
The new girl looked at the two of them and said, "I do not think either of you will enjoy completing this mission if all you can do is fight. We are all going to have to pitch in and work together as a team. Let us start with introductions. My name is Lieutenant Glacier Breeze. You will address me only by my first name. We will have no need for formalities where we are going. As well as graduating from the academy of defense, I have also completed training as a psychologist for both humans and aliens. Now, how about you two introduce yourselves as well as what assets you have that may be useful for this mission."
The doctor quickly said, "My name is Sterling Sharp. I completed my medical training not too long ago and I also hold a degree in engineering. I specialize in many er...unique cases."
At this Blaeyde was slightly disappointed that the doctor's name wasn't snappy or stinger, but she figured that nobody would name their kid one of those two names, even if it were someone as ill-tempered as the doctor. Blaeyde realized that it was her turn to introduce herself, and she said, "My name is Blaeyde Flynn. I specialize in putting sprinkles on all my cooking and singing nursery rhymes. Oh, and I'm pretty good at kicking butt."
Sterling Sharp immediately sent a nasty glare her way and said, "This isn't kindergarten comedy hour! We are about to leave our very lives here behind!" while Glacier Breeze said nothing, trying not to let out a little giggle.
"Having a comedian in our ranks will serve its purpose in boosting morale. I am honored to meet you, Blaeyde. Welcome to the team." Glacier said once she had regained her composure.
Sterling rolled her eyes and said, "How about we get going! I don't know if you noticed, but this stuff is HEAVY and I absolutely CANNOT leave it behind."
"You can put your cargo in the ship. We have one team member who is unaccounted for." Glacier coolly replied to Sterling.
"I already put my bags in the ship when I got here." Blaeyde said with a smirk as Sterling opened the cargo hold of the ship, surprised to see a few boxes already there. Glacier seemed slightly impressed with Blaeyde's enthusiasm for the mission.
They waited for a half hour before they boarded the ship to set up for the mission, the fourth team member still nowhere to be found, and without her they would be unable to leave, especially because the fourth team member was supposed to be a pilot as well as a technician who knew the ins and outs of the ship. The ship assigned to them was more than large enough to house and sustain ten people, and they only had four on their team.
It was equipped with building supplies, a laboratory, individual quarters, a small arcade with the latest in games designed to sharpen their skills as well as provide entertainment. There was also a room for fitness training as well as a pool complete with three waterslides for their time to relax.
To put it simply, the ship was practically a mansion with everything they could ever need or want. It was also sleek and designed for the hardest conditions, and it could be disassembled to for parts if they ever had the need. It was after all a one way trip to XT-34. Once they had decided which rooms they wanted and had put their packed belongings there, they went outside the ship to wait for the fourth team member. An hour had passed, when finally a young girl no older than thirteen with wild hot-pink hair rushed down the flight deck and addressed Glacier with a salute.
"Hey kid, any word of where our pilot is? We've been waiting for quite some time now." Blaeyde said.
"Sorry I'm late." The young girl said, "I'm the pilot. It took me forever to find my way here. I am so sorry!"
"Great. An under-age pilot with a bad sense of direction." Sterling muttered to herself.
"Welcome to the circus!" Blaeyde said enthusiastically, holding out her hand to the girl.
"Thanks! I'm a little new here. I just transferred from earth so that is why I'm late. It's nice to meet you. My name is Scarlet Wilde, Pilot and robotics expert. Wow, it feels so awesome to say that!" the girl said, looking around with wide eyes.
"Under-age and over qualified." Sterling said sarcastically.
"Oh, ignore the doc. She just has a constant stick up her aaaa...rear end!" Blaeyde said.
Sterling gaped and said, "I do NOT!"
"Break it up, girls. Well, Scarlet, it is good to have you on our team." Glacier said, leading Scarlet on board. Scarlet put her belongings in the room she chose and then took her station at the front of the ship, punched in the launch code, and soon they were shooting through deep space once they had been authorized for takeoff.
